About The Position

The Catalyst Lab at Microsoft Research is seeking a Research Intern to work on applied studies of power system behavior under extreme conditions, such as space weather and geomagnetic disturbances. The Research Intern will use existing power-system and physics-based models to analyze system responses, assess operational risk, and study the impact of external drivers (e.g., solar storms) on grid reliability.
This role is application-focused: you will run simulations, analyze results, and connect physical phenomena to real-world power system operations.

Requirements

• Currently enrolled in a bachelor's, master's or PhD program in Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, Applied Mathematics, or a related field.
• Research Interns are expected to be physically located in their manager’s Microsoft worksite location for the duration of their internship.
• In addition to the qualifications below, you’ll need to submit a minimum of two reference letters for this position as well as a cover letter and any relevant work or research samples.

Note that reference letters cannot be requested until after you have submitted your application, and furthermore, that they might not be automatically requested for all candidates. Nice To Haves

• Interest in power systems, energy infrastructure, or space/environmental effects on engineered systems.
• Comfortable with coding and data analysis (e.g., Python, MATLAB, Julia).
