About the position

Virginia Cancer Specialists, an affiliate of McKesson Specialty Health and US Oncology, is seeking a Research Infusion Nurse for our Fairfax office. This is a Full Time position with a 4 day per week/10 hour shift schedule. A Sign-On Bonus of $5,000.00 is offered for qualified candidates. Under general supervision, the nurse will provide professional nursing care for patients, adhering to national and company standards and guidelines for specialty regulations. The role requires recognizing the physical, psychological, and spiritual aspects of care and participating in company-wide quality initiatives. The nurse will support and adhere to the US Oncology Compliance Program, including the Code of Ethics and Business Standards.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates knowledge of age-specific differences in the patient population.
  • Assesses and monitors therapy of patients using appropriate technical skills under the direction of a physician.
  • Assists physician with exams and procedures.
  • Maintains efficient and appropriate patient flow.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of reimbursement procedures and charge capture.
  • Performs venipuncture, accesses implanted ports, and maintains central venous access devices.
  • Documents all elements of care.
  • Communicates pertinent information and interventions to the physician or mid-level provider.
  • Serves as a resource person to medical assistants and LPNs.
  • Triages patient/family phone calls and documents relevant information in the patient's chart.
  • Assesses patient/family needs and provides teaching.
  • Demonstrates awareness of community resources available to patients and assists with referrals.
  • Provides nursing coverage for satellite offices as needed.
  • Follows OSHA guidelines when handling cytotoxic agents and biohazardous waste.
  • Maintains current knowledge of oncology nursing through ongoing education.
  • Participates in professional development activities and maintains professional affiliations.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality.
  • Serves as mentor/preceptor and provides guidance to less experienced nurses.

Requirements

  • Graduate from an accredited program for professional nursing education, BSN preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years nursing experience, preferably in an oncology environment.
  • Current or pending Oncology certification preferred.
  • Experience and knowledge of medications in the treatment of cancer preferred.
  • Current RN state license with the State Board of Nursing in practicing state.
  • Current CPR certification required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in the bone marrow or hematopoietic stem cell transplant setting.
  • Knowledge of ambulatory infusion pump use and maintenance.
