The Dhupar Lab focuses on the timely and highly relevant topic of the biodistribution and health effects of inhaled microplastics. As a clinically oriented and translational lab, our starting point is on the bench but our end-point is the patient. We utilize a range of models including cell cultures, mice, and human tissue. We maintain close collaborations with investigators in artificial intelligence, metabolomics, pulmonology, cardiology, and organoid biology (WFIRM and WFORCE). Expectations: Techniques commonly used include microplastic production for research, in vivo mouse microplastic lung delivery, exercise testing, pulmonary function testing, echocardiography, microscopy (fluorescence, electron, etc.), IVIS imaging, PCR/RNA sequencing, histology, and processing human samples from the operating room. Flexibility and learning new techniques as required for the project is important. A high degree of motivation and desire for independence is ideal. Expectations include being highly organized, timely presentation of data, communicating effectively with collaborators, writing abstracts, presenting at national meetings, publishing papers, and assisting in grant development. The lab frequently hosts undergraduate and graduate trainees, so enthusiasm for teaching and mentorship is important. Opportunities: For candidates interested in clinical exposure and translational research careers, there are opportunities to observe in the operating room and outpatient clinic. There are several regular conferences through the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery and the Program for Lung Health (among others). We provide a strong environment for early-career investigators, and we will assist you in attaining your desired career goals. Culture: We are a highly functional, collaborative, and collegial lab environment committed to rigorous science, professional development, and mutual support.
