About the position

The position involves providing supervision, technical support, and training in the operation, installation, fabrication, and maintenance of precision technical, mechanical, and electronic equipment, as well as industrial scale metals manufacturing equipment. The role includes assisting in the supervision of student work in the lab and providing precision machining and technical support for Faculty, Staff, and Students. Additionally, the position requires the design of research components, methods, and the development of new technical and lab techniques and safety measures.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the installation, operation, fabrication, maintenance, and repair of shop and lab equipment such as high temperature metals melting and heat treatment furnaces, analytical equipment, and industrial-scale manufacturing equipment.
  • Fabrication of highly specialized devices and test specimens for use in research projects.
  • Responsible for all SARDI laboratories including working with physical facilities on building systems, layout, and functions.
  • Help support and maintain instrumentation, electrical, and controls-related systems.
  • Assist faculty and students with designs for research projects and special equipment, many of which are unique and one of a kind.
  • Supervise and train students and staff on the operation of laboratory equipment and lab technical and safety techniques and protocol.
  • Maintain computer software related to research and education and provide instruction on the use of the software.
  • Provide training and instruction on the operation of electron and optical microscopes.
  • Coordinate and schedule use of laboratory equipment and instrumentation for research and teaching. Address and/or resolve scheduling conflicts.
  • Maintain equipment and consumables inventory lists, assist in the set-up for special occasions, review account and purchase requisitions.
  • Act as Safety Representative for SARDI labs, ensuring that the labs and research areas are well maintained in accordance with safety requirements.
  • Ensure that labs are in compliance with EHS regulations.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least 2 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired.

Nice-to-haves

  • Five or more years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills is necessary.
  • Experience with operation and maintenance of industrial manufacturing equipment, vacuum systems, PLC controllers, electronics, and mechanical skills.
  • Machine shop skills (milling, turning, welding, etc. and custom manufacturing).
