As a Research Engineer, you will lead and contribute to important R&D projects for PPG Aerospace Transparencies, Specialty & Transparent Armor, and other corporate growth programs. You will focus on scientific principles of ionic coatings for commercial applications, advancing technical knowledge, and developing patentable technologies. You will report to PPG.

  • Lead R&D projects supporting Aerospace Transparencies and other strategic programs
  • Promote innovation in thin film coatings and contribute to patentable technology development
  • Collaborate across S&T, design, and production teams to implement new technologies and resolve manufacturing issues
  • Support production with troubleshooting and transitioning new materials/processes into operations
  • Be a technical liaison for coating process improvements, ensuring safety, quality, and profitability goals are met
  • Present research results through technical papers to partners
  • Maintain accurate documentation, perform materials analysis, and ensure equipment calibration and upkeep
  • Lead Product Development Team (PDT) technical reviews and management gate reviews
  • Participate in safety and quality improvement plans
  • Develop and implement new or substitute materials and processes
  • Coordinate the transition of materials from R&D to manufacturing
  • Perform QC testing and ensure compliance with specifications and ASTM standards
  • Maintain laboratory best practices, documentation, and Point databases
  • Support EH&S compliance and perform routine 5S and housekeeping activities
  • Provide technical support to internal and external customers
  • PhD or MS in Physics, Materials Science, or Engineering with at least 1 year of relevant experience
  • Experience with thin film coatings and sputtering conductive metals/oxides
  • Knowledge of vacuum coating systems, PLCs, and chamber components
  • Proficiency with SEM, FTIR, spectrophotometry, and profilometry
  • Commitment to lab safety and familiarity with 6S practices
  • Ability to collaborate with program managers, engineers, and teams
