Seamless data sharing and access to models across gRED and pRED are essential to maximizing these opportunities. The new Computational Sciences Center of Excellence (CoE) is a strategic, unified group whose goal is to harness this transformative power of data and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to assist our scientists in both pRED and gRED to deliver more innovative and transformative medicines for patients worldwide. Within the CoE organization, the Data and Digital Catalyst organization drives the modernization of our computational and data ecosystems and integration of digital technologies across Research and Early Development to enable our stakeholders, power data-driven science and accelerate decision-making. The Opportunity The Research & Early Development Architect is a well-established, highly capable and credible architect who will contribute to and drive the implementation of a modern enterprise architecture strategy across Research and Early Development to build a modern, cohesive, scalable, and flexible technology stack that supports the ecosystem of platforms and systems as well as enabling seamless data flow and integration. In this role you will be the key architectural driver responsible for translating our long-term vision into pragmatic execution, enabling critical scientific use cases today while building the foundation for the next generation of automation, AI-enabled biology and drug discovery. You will contribute to the development of architecture principles and frameworks that underpin the delivery of seamless digital journeys and modern corporate capabilities. You will leverage your understanding of Pharma Research & Early Development to shape and guide how our core systems and platforms are built to power scalable research infrastructure, ensure operability, and enable cutting edge computational capabilities. The role balances scientific-centric design with robust enterprise integration, data privacy, and regulatory compliance. We strive to transform our digital landscape in order to advance the delivery of more innovative and transformative medicines for patients worldwide. In this role, you will partner with scientists and engineers to shape transformation programmes, digital service enhancements, and continuous improvement initiatives. You will support enterprise-wide architecture governance and decision making. You will make pivotal contributions to the future of the CoE and Research and Early Development by: Contributing to the definition and building of a modern enterprise architecture vision with standards, governance, and reusable design patterns. Driving the adoption of modern architectural principles and reference architectures that facilitate integration, automation, and AI/ML enablement across the organization. Evaluating and embedding cutting-edge technologies and forward-thinking architectural strategies to support future research and early development needs. Leading the transformation of bespoke legacy systems and complex tech stacks into modern, modular, and service-oriented ecosystems. Establishing best practices for compliance, data security, and privacy, while fostering a culture of collaboration with partners across Roche Informatics, gRED, and pRED. Driving the architecture for large-scale strategic initiatives and application development projects to facilitate the effective acquisition, processing, and sharing of scientific information.

Requirements

  • You hold a BSc degree (MS or PhD preferred) in a scientific or technical field with 8+ years of experience (Senior Principal Engineer, Research & Early Development); BSc degree (MS or PhD preferred) with 10–12+ years of experience (Research & Early Development Enterprise Architect)
  • Experience as a matrix leader is a plus.
  • You have proven experience in enterprise and solution architecture, including translating strategic vision into actionable solution designs and implementation blueprints in large, complex, regulated organizations, ideally in the healthcare or biotech domain.
  • You possess strong knowledge in enterprise systems, data, and information architectures across cloud, hybrid, and on-premise environments. Familiarity with AWS is a plus.
  • You have a strong understanding of modern digital technologies, including microservices, event-driven systems, AI/ML platforms, and modern DevSecOps practices.
  • You have an understanding of how data is generated, processed, and leveraged to inform scientific decisions in Pharma Research & Early Development.
  • You have demonstrated experience in mentoring, influencing, and guiding technical peers and collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
  • You have a proven ability to design and drive the delivery of complex computational projects, ensuring efficiency, scalability, and reproducibility.
  • You are a strong communicator with the ability to clearly document and present architectural designs and options to technical teams and business stakeholders.
  • This position requires onsite work 3 days per week.
