About The Position

The Software Engineer position at the Charles P. Lin Lab involves developing an automated machine learning and image processing pipeline to detect and track white blood cells from image data. This role is crucial for advancing a translational project aimed at noninvasively assessing inflammation in human patients. The engineer will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of experts in optics, engineering, biology, and medicine to enhance diagnostic capabilities in low-resource settings.

Requirements

  • BS in biomedical engineering or related fields (mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, physics, etc.).
  • 3 years' experience working with basic electronic components (LEDs, electric circuits, Arduino, etc.).
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Strong communication and teamwork abilities.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's or Ph.D. preferred.
  • Experience using Zemax Optical studio software.
  • Experience in designing PCBs.
  • Experience with soldering electrical components.
  • Experience with the assembling of compact imaging systems.
  • Basic knowledge of optics and the development of imaging system prototypes.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop mechanical systems, components, and assemblies using CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks).
  • Use 3D printers (e.g., Formlabs) to print mechanical parts, inspect them, and make necessary improvements.
  • Integrate various optics and electronics into the 3D-printed mechanical components.
  • Help characterize developed microscopes by measuring magnification, field of view, and optical resolution.
  • Develop basic electronic circuits to control LEDs, actuators, motorized stages, and electrically tunable lenses.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues during the prototyping phase.
  • Document processes, methodologies, and findings to ensure reproducibility of results.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional professionals (postdocs, engineers, research assistants).

Benefits

  • Affirmative Action Employer
