About The Position

The Research Data Librarian at the University of Kansas will play a crucial role in advancing the libraries' research data services, focusing on data management, curation, and literacy. This tenure-track faculty position involves collaboration with researchers to address their data-related needs throughout the research data lifecycle, primarily through teaching and consulting. The librarian will also contribute to the libraries' initiatives in data visualization, analysis, and curation, while supporting the Carpentries program and engaging in scholarly research activities.

Requirements

  • ALA-accredited master's degree in Library/Information Science or equivalent, or a PhD in library and information science from an accredited program by the appointment date.
  • For Associate Librarian: Minimum of four years of successful professional experience at the rank of Assistant Librarian.
  • Documented evidence of high-level professional expertise and accomplishments that advance the goals of KU Libraries.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of tools and techniques for research data management, cleaning, analysis, documentation, storage, sharing, and curation.
  • Experience with teaching or training.
  • Engagement with The Carpentries or similar open models for teaching computing and data topics.
  • Knowledge of data curation, security, privacy, storage, and reuse practices such as FAIR or CARE principles.
  • Experience in information management, open publishing, scholarly communication, or electronic resources.

Responsibilities

  • Assist researchers with data management literacy, planning, and implementation through workshops, library instruction, and consultations.
  • Teach and help at Software and Data Carpentry workshops, and hold consultations on computing and data skills.
  • Consult with researchers on constructing Data Management Plans for sponsored projects aligned with KU infrastructure and policy.
  • Contribute to DMPTool administration and localizations for KU-specific resources.
  • Collaborate with colleagues on library initiatives in data analysis, visualization, curation, access, and researcher impact.
  • Work with campus units on sustainable service and infrastructure initiatives for managing research data.
  • Engage in scholarly research activity contributing to the profession's collective knowledge.
  • Participate in service to the Libraries, the University, and professional organizations.
