Carnegie Mellon Computing Services is seeking a seasoned Research Data Analytics Advisor to join the Data team. This role involves leading the consultant and partnering with senior leadership, faculty, and research support staff across the university. The successful candidate will leverage their expertise in research activities and data process improvement to tackle high-impact strategic questions, streamline research data workflows, and lead the standardization and design of a new research data ecosystem. The goal is to deliver scalable, best-practice solutions that have a lasting impact. The Teams: Computing Services: The central IT division, Computing Services, delivers IT services that strategically support the university's goals. Service decisions are guided by interaction and valuable input from colleagues across the education, research, and administration efforts of the university. The Data Technologies Team within Computing Services focuses on dataset curation, data pipeline optimization, and system integrations, championing data governance and quality for CMU’s data hub. Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR): OVPR is responsible for fostering interdisciplinary research initiatives at one of the nation's premier research institutions. The office provides comprehensive research administration and policy for all colleges, schools, and the university's more than 100 centers and institutes. Working closely with leadership, faculty, students, and staff, OVPR ensures an innovative and supportive research environment across all disciplines and campuses, while guaranteeing that all research activities comply with regulations and University policy.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Information Systems, Business Analytics, Engineering, or related field.
  • Proven track record of leading end-to-end process redesign and system migrations.
  • Exceptional analytical mindset, problem-solving skills, and attention to detail.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication with demonstrated ability to influence senior leaders and technical teams.
  • A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in Higher Education Administration, Data Analytics, MBA, or related field.
  • Familiarity with federal grant compliance (NIH, NSF) and contract-management best practices.
  • Prior success in deploying standardized reporting frameworks in a decentralized academic environment.

Responsibilities

  • Strategic Analysis & Advisory: Partner with OVPR, deans, and cross-functional teams to frame and answer “big” strategic questions about research performance, resource allocation, and growth opportunities.
  • Support CMU in the development of a holistic Research Data Analytics Strategy and the design and development of a specific data solution to meet the data needs for Principal Investigators, including being a primary point of contact with the selected vendor.
  • Translate data and analytics needs into actionable requirements and design for data products, dashboards, roadmaps, and other analytic solutions.
  • Process & Data Improvement: Design and audit research data collection and analysis processes to eliminate redundancies, evaluate data quality, and make recommendations to improve to accelerate decision-making.
  • Develop comprehensive process guides, data dictionaries, and checklists for research processes to map the data flow for research reporting and analytics workflows.
  • Work with vendor and/or the Data team on the design of data models, reusable tools, and templates that unify decentralized data and reporting across colleges, centers, and labs.
