About The Position

We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Research Associate.

In this role, the successful candidate will be responsible for conducting independent basic science experimentation based on research conducted in the assigned laboratory under the mentorship of a senior scientist. Individual is expected to seek to build a portfolio of research accomplishments in preparation for acquiring a higher degree in biomedical research or medicine.

The Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at NYU Langone Health is seeking a highly motivated Research Associate (pre-Masters / pre-PhD) to support the NYU site of the NIH-funded HEALthy Brain and Child Development (HBCD) Study, a large-scale national consortium examining early brain and behavioral development: https://hbcdstudy.org/.
The NYU Langone Health site is led by MPIs Drs. Moriah Thomason, Lauren Shuffrey, and Uju Berry. This longitudinal pregnancy cohort enrolls mothers during pregnancy and follows families through early childhood, integrating multimodal data including medical and family history, anthropometrics, biospecimens, social and environmental exposures, neurodevelopmental assessments, EEG, and MRI.
This position is ideal for individuals planning to pursue graduate training in psychology, neuroscience, public health, or medicine. The Research Associate will gain extensive hands-on experience in pediatric and perinatal research, including neurodevelopmental assessment, infant EEG/MRI acquisition, and large-scale longitudinal data collection.

Requirements

• College graduate with a B.S. or B.A. in Biomedical or Physical Sciences.
• A minimum commitment of two years is required and placement in position may not exceed three years.
• Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.

Responsibilities

• Generates hypotheses and designs and performs experiments to test them.
• After a period of time working in the laboratory, the candidate will be expected to train graduate students and post-doctoral fellows in experimental design, technique and performance.
• Participates in the editing and proofing of grant proposals, annual grant reports, and manuscripts for publication and recommends modifications to the Principal Investigator.
• Contributes to the preparation of articles on research outcomes and progress and to the submission of same for publication.
• Reads and understands relevant scientific literature.
• Presents findings at lab meeting, responds to challenges, and participates in exchanges of ideas to advance the science.
• Demonstrates a significant level of intellectual input into the design of the project.
• Communicates results and collaborates with other professionals in the lab.
• Prepares figures and diagrams for presentations and publications.
• Based on results, independently suggests and tests modifications to protocols.
• Records all experimental findings in a laboratory notebook, analyze and interpret experimental findings.
• Executes multiple experiments simultaneously over time independently.
• Collect maternal sociodemographic, mental health, and questionnaire-based survey data using REDCap
• Administer neurodevelopmental assessments (e.g., NIH Toolbox, Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development, parentchild interaction tasks)
• Conduct behavioral and observational assessments with infants and young children
• Acquire resting-state and task-based EEG data from infants through early childhood
• Assist with and/or conduct MRI data collection with infants and young children
• Assist with collection, processing, storage, documentation, and shipment of biospecimens (e.g., blood, urine, nails)
• Maintain accurate biospecimen tracking and documentation
• Upload and manage data transfer processes between the NYU site and the HBCD consortium
• Maintain organized, high-quality datasets and study documentation
• Participate in HBCD consortium-wide meetings, trainings, and protocol updates
• Assist with recruitment and retention efforts, including outreach to special populations (e.g., mothers with substance use disorders)
• Support coordination of study visits
• Manage volunteer staff
• Contribute to study organization and operational needs, including ordering supplies and maintaining databases
• Assist with general research coordination and team support
