The Language Technologies Institute (LTI) at Carnegie Mellon University is a world-renowned research and education hub at the forefront of natural language processing, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and human-computer interaction. Established within the School of Computer Science, LTI pioneers innovative approaches to understanding, processing, and generating human language in both written and spoken forms. LTI is seeking a Research Associate to assist with working on our ongoing research project examining the safety of tool-using AI agents, exploring how to make AI agents safer using on-the-fly mitigation methods. Ultimately, this will involve conducting the research and writing it up as an academic paper. Adaptability, excellence, and passion are vital qualities within Carnegie Mellon University. We are in search of a team member who can effectively interact with a varied population of internal and external partners at a high level of integrity. We are looking for someone who shares our values and who will support the mission of the university through their work.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • 1-3 years of research experience in machine learning, natural language processing, AI safety or AI systems.
  • Strong analytical, communication, problem-solving and reasoning skills.
  • A combination of education and proven experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.
  • Successful background check

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Help with designing and implementing evaluation frameworks to assess the safety and alignment of autonomous AI systems.
  • Analyze model behavior in open-ended environments and document safety implications.
  • Help co-author and contribute formal research papers for publication in AI safety and NLP venues.
  • Other duties as assigned.
