Research Associate I - Transgene Analysis

United TherapeuticsBlacksburg, VA

About The Position

We are the first publicly-traded biotech or pharmaceutical company to take the form of a public benefit corporation. Our public benefit purpose is to provide a brighter future for patients through the development of novel pharmaceutical therapies; and technologies that expand the availability of transplantable organs. United Therapeutics (Nasdaq: UTHR ) seeks to travel down the corridors of indifference to develop treatments for rare, deadly diseases. We were founded in 1996 by a family seeking a cure for their daughter’s pulmonary arterial hypertension ( PAH ). Today, we have six FDA-approved therapies that treat PAH, pulmonary hypertension associated with interstitial lung disease ( PH-ILD ) and neuroblastoma, a rare pediatric cancer. Our near-term pipeline seeks to develop additional therapies for PAH and pulmonary fibrosis ( PF ). The cure for end-stage life-threatening diseases like PAH, PH-ILD, PF, and many others is an organ transplant, but only a small percentage of donated organs are available to address the vast need. For this reason, we are working to create manufactured organs to address the shortage of kidneys, hearts, lungs, and livers available for transplant. We believe an unlimited supply of tolerable, transplantable organs will eliminate the transplant waiting list and cure end-stage organ diseases for which transplant is not currently an option. How you’ll contribute You're passionate about science and want to be in a hands-on role supporting our transgene analysis team. The Research Associate I will assist with basic Molecular Biology techniques and will focus on generating protein expression data from cell and tissue samples. Apply scientific research methodologies to execute experimental protocols, troubleshoot issues, and manage daily tasks efficiently

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in molecular biology or a related field of study
  • 1+ years of experience in hands on in a research lab setting and 1+ years of experience in quantitative biochemical or biological assays (e.g., DNA/protein quantification, Western blot, ELISA)
  • Ability to handle and process animal samples for a variety of analysis including Southern and Western analysis
  • Hands on experience using Southern analysis to determine transgene presence in DNA samples
  • Familiarity with concept of Western analysis
  • Proficient in MS Office

Responsibilities

  • Perform cell and tissue homogenization and measure total protein content using a BioTEK plate reader
  • Conduct and interpret SDS-PAGE Western blotting to evaluate transgene expression in cell and tissue samples
  • Utilize an automated capillary western blot (Protein Simple) to assess transgene expression and serum antibody detection
  • Generate quantitative western blot data using compass software and excel
  • Receive, process, and inventory samples received from collaborators
  • Complete western analysis of pig cell and tissue lysates, including protein quantification, sample and buffer preparation, electrophoresis and blotting, as well as detection
  • Maintain inventories of porcine tissue, plasma, and serum samples (both in freezers and digital databases)
  • Follow laboratory safety protocols and handle biohazardous materials, including human or animal cells and tissues
  • Assist with general lab maintenance, including cleaning, autoclaving biohazardous waste, preparing buffers, and ordering supplies
