About The Position

The STORMWERX Research Center at Harrisburg University of Science and Technology is seeking a highly motivated and technically skilled Research Associate to support applied research and development in advanced manufacturing, automation, and emerging production technologies. This is a hands-on, lab-centered role within a small but rapidly growing research team focused on next-generation manufacturing systems, digital engineering, and technology transition. The ideal candidate is an independent researcher and practitioner who is equally comfortable designing experiments, operating advanced equipment, and collaborating on multidisciplinary research initiatives. We are particularly interested in candidates with deep practical experience in manufacturing science, engineering, or a closely related field who can contribute immediately to research execution, prototyping, and technical problem-solving. This is not a purely academic role. We are seeking a hands-on researcher who enjoys working in the lab, operating equipment, and building real systems in advanced manufacturing environments.

Requirements

  • PhD in Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Materials Science, Robotics, or a closely related field OR MS degree in a relevant field plus significant hands-on research or industry experience
  • Demonstrated hands-on research experience in one or more of the following: Additive Manufacturing Robotics & Automation CNC Manufacturing 3D Scanning / Metrology Advanced Welding or Hybrid Manufacturing
  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Creo, CATIA, or similar)
  • Experience with CAM workflows and digital manufacturing toolchains
  • Ability to independently plan, execute, and troubleshoot technical research tasks
  • Strong experimental design and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent organizational and technical documentation abilities

Nice To Haves

  • Working knowledge across multiple advanced manufacturing domains (e.g., AM + CNC, or Robotics + Scanning)
  • Experience operating research-grade manufacturing or automation equipment
  • Background in applied research environments, R&D labs, or technology development centers
  • Experience with: Digital twins or model-based engineering Sensor integration and process monitoring Hybrid or multi-material manufacturing systems
  • Record of peer-reviewed publications, technical reports, or patents
  • Experience contributing to or authoring grant proposals (e.g., DoD, NSF, SBIR/STTR)
  • Familiarity with research transitioning from low TRL to higher TRL systems

Responsibilities

  • Conduct applied research in advanced manufacturing, automation, and related engineering domains
  • Design, prototype, and test components and systems using modern manufacturing tools and workflows
  • Operate and maintain advanced manufacturing equipment and laboratory systems
  • Develop CAD models, manufacturing plans, and experimental test setups
  • Support and lead technical research tasks across multiple concurrent projects
  • Collaborate with faculty, students, and external partners on research and development initiatives
  • Document research findings through technical reports, presentations, and publications
  • Assist with proposal development, grant writing, and sponsored research activities
  • Contribute to the growth and technical direction of the STORMWERX research portfolio
