About The Position

Requirements

  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Marine Science, Natural Science, Engineering, or related field.
  • 3 years of progressively responsible professional experience in small boat operations, water safety, and/or SCUBA diving.
  • Considerable working knowledge of boating, diving, and water safety principles and practices.
  • Understanding of applicable federal and state laws related to diving and boating safety.
  • Ability to resolve complex problems using creative reasoning and logic.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information clearly in writing and verbally.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with various stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in operating a personal computer and word processing software.
  • Certification as a SCUBA instructor or ability to complete certification within 6 months.
  • Scientific Diver training from an AAUS Organizational Member institution or equivalent.
  • Experience in diving supervision and diving-related safety.
  • Experience using small boats as a research platform.
  • US Coast Guard-recognized boating certification.

  • DAN Oxygen Administration Instructor or DAN Diving First Aid for Professional Divers Instructor.
  • CPR and First Aid Instructor certification from a recognized agency.
  • Experience with Closed-Circuit Rebreathers (CCR).
  • Certified Visual Cylinder Inspector.
  • Experience with GPS technology.
  • Background in computer databases.
  • US Coastguard Captain's license Master of Un-inspected Passenger Vessel or higher.
  • Postgraduate degree in a field of natural science.
  • Motorboat Operator Certification Course (MOCC) or Motorboat Operator Training Course (MOTC) certified.
  • Trained repair technician for a major brand of diving equipment.
  • Lifeguard Certification.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as Dive and Boating Program Manager for HIMB, managing a comprehensive dive and boating safety program.
  • Manage HIMB's scientific diving program and ensure compliance with UH Dive Safety policies.
  • Review all HIMB research dive plans to facilitate research and ensure risk events and emergency procedures are considered.
  • Coordinate with the UH Dive Safety Program to conduct scientific diver training for HIMB personnel.
  • Conduct or coordinate proficiency and checkout dives for HIMB faculty, staff, and student researchers.
  • Facilitate diving for visiting researchers and divers from other institutions.
  • Maintain HIMB's scientific diving equipment and facility, including inventory management of SCUBA cylinders.
  • Perform annual inspections and service of SCUBA equipment for HIMB Scientific Divers.
  • Manage the HIMB boating program, including conducting boat training and checkouts for new operators.
  • Provide vessel support for HIMB projects and serve as the on-site contact for boating operations.
  • Develop maintenance protocols and tracking for the research fleet and implement a regular maintenance schedule.
  • Manage RCUH revolving accounts for boating and diving, ensuring balanced accounts and tracking revenue.
  • Conduct Diving First Aid for Professional Divers courses and maintain First Aid training materials.
  • Support the removal and replacement of submerged seawater intake pipes for HIMB's experimental systems.
  • Serve as working supervisor for the Marine Safety Assistant.
