Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Knowledge of laboratory maintenance and equipment.
  • Knowledge of computers and computer software related to the position.
  • All positions are security-sensitive. Applicants are subject to a criminal history investigation, and employment is contingent upon the institution’s verification of credentials and/or other information required by the institution’s procedures, including the completion of the criminal history check.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and execute yearly crossings in the greenhouse
  • Supervise, train, and monitor student workers
  • Prepare fields, maintain irrigation and drainage systems, plant bare root and potted plants, maintain fertility treatments to ensure optimal growth, prune plants, and maintain equipment used in the program
  • Execute pest, disease, and weed control and fertility program in the greenhouse, nursery, beds, and field plots. (requires a Pesticide applicator's License)
  • Propagate and grow experimental roses as needed
  • Measure/rate plants for various aspects of plant growth, quality, yield, or resistance to disease
  • Collect samples of fruit, leaves, stems, and flowers for characterization
  • Help with breeding programs by making hybridization, collecting pollen and seed, cleaning/stratifying seed, germination, and growth of seedlings
  • Summarize data collected
  • Write reports
  • Plan and coordinate research meetings
  • Manage online presence of the program
  • Maintain warehouse, headhouse, and field box for organization and cleanliness
  • Other duties as required
