About The Position

This Research Assistant will support the continued development of object detection models for Uncrewed Surface Vehicles (USVs) at the Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping. The employee would be expected to manage existing image datasets, through tasks such as data cleaning, organization, and annotation. The primary objective of this position is to expand and improve the existing classification scheme and advance existing models through performance evaluation and iterative retraining. Prominent obstacles to USVs should be included in future models, and evaluation should explore the impact of model performance on USV operations. Day to day activities include programming (Python/C++), image annotation, and technical documentation development, in addition to supporting general laboratory objectives.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Ocean Engineering or similar
  • Programming backing in Python/C++
  • Background in development of object detection models and work with USVs
  • Must be able to lift 40 lbs.
  • Strong written and verbal communication

Responsibilities

  • (40%) Manage existing research image datasets through tasks such as data cleaning, organization, and annotation
  • (40%) Expand and improve the existing classification scheme of object detection models, and advance existing models through performance evaluation and iterative retraining
  • (20%) Supporting the general goals of the USV laboratory
