About The Position

Summary: The Research Assistant will work closely with Dr. Lauren Strauss to research the history of Washington, DC’s 20th century Jewish community and its political/social involvements. Most of this research will take place in archives housed in the DC area. The ideal candidate should have a strong academic background, especially in history (public history experience is a plus), excellent communication skills, and a passion for research.

Requirements

  • Good academic standing with a strong GPA from undergraduate and, if possible, graduate programs that the RA attended.
  • Previous research experience is an asset and central to this position.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to identify and convey “big-picture” concepts extracted from smaller, detailed materials.
  • Effective organizational and time management skills.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the professor on an ongoing research project.
  • Cull information on specific topics in DC-based archives, in conjunction with Dr. Strauss.
  • Assist in occasional data collection and oral histories taken by the professor. The RA will not conduct oral histories on their own, but may be called upon to help organize material from them.
  • Assist in organizing data and other information gleaned from researching in archives and other sources.
  • Transfer photographs and scans of materials found in archives to a shared file, help to create charts or spreadsheets to organize materials by topic.
