The Research Assistant position at the Semel Institute, part of UCLA, involves supporting research activities under the direct supervision of the Principal Investigator (PI). The role focuses on conducting various laboratory experiments, maintaining accurate records, and assisting in the preparation of reports for manuscripts and grant applications. This position is ideal for individuals with a background in neuroscience or biology, particularly those with experience in working with Drosophila.

  • Perform oviposition and oviduct contraction assays in flies.
  • Maintain accurate records of procedures used to conduct experiments and collect lab measurements and data.
  • Assist other lab members in behavioral, immunohistochemistry, and molecular biology experiments.
  • Work with Fluorescent and Confocal Microscopes to determine expression patterns of transgenes used for oviduct contraction assays.
  • Assist the PI in the preparation of reports for manuscripts and grant applications.
  • Ensure compliance of the laboratory environment with UCLA mandates and follow applicable safety policies/procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Undergraduate degree in Neuroscience, Biology, or a related field is highly desirable.
  • Experience working with Drosophila is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of standard laboratory equipment and supplies.
  • Knowledge of UCLA Environmental Health & Safety guidelines.
  • Excellent attention to detail for accurate data collection, entry, and analysis.
  • Good communication skills and ability to work well with multiple individuals at different skill levels.
  • Ability to maintain an organized working area and keep accurate records.
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety procedures for handling biohazard and chemical waste.
  • Ability to work independently or as a team member.
  • Experience with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Prism, and statistical software is preferred.
  • Demonstrate an interest in learning new techniques and concepts.
  • Competitive hourly pay ranging from $26.52 to $31.63.
