About The Position

The Research Assistant (Public Safety Research) at Wayne State University will support urban safety initiatives, focusing on data-driven crime reduction strategies such as Youth CompStat and Community CompStat. Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant area of social science is required; Master's degree is highly preferred.
  • Experience working with crime data is highly preferred.
  • Skilled in MS Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Basic statistical analysis and mapping skills; willingness to pursue further training.
  • Advanced skills in ESRI ArcGIS are an advantage.
  • Computer programming and/or database management experience is an advantage.
  • Strong problem resolution, organizational, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Ability to present effectively to diverse stakeholders.
  • Prior experience training, supervising, or managing employees is required.
  • Familiarity with Detroit areas and neighborhoods is required.

Responsibilities

  • Identify relevant crime patterns and trends utilizing information from crime reports and other sources, and present summary of findings in various formats.
  • Perform analysis of crime data and community data.
  • Facilitate Youth CompStat and Community CompStat meetings by presenting crime information to support collaboration and decision-making.
  • Communicate reliably and effectively with community partners, including law enforcement and local politicians.
  • Represent CompStat and AmeriCorps Urban Safety Program at local events and workshops, including availability for nights and weekends.
  • Supervise AmeriCorps members for public safety and health initiatives, including workload management and performance evaluation.
  • Ensure staff maintain work plans and track progress towards success indicators.
  • Develop and update program materials and communications, ensuring inclusivity.
  • Retrieve or produce deliverable documents for law enforcement and public safety organizations.
  • Conduct literature reviews and prepare best practice protocols on public safety interventions.
