About The Position

NYSCF’s Type 1 Diabetes team is seeking a Research Assistant III. Reporting to a Principal Scientist, you will work closely with other members of the JAX | NYSCF Research Institute, including stem cell biologists, automation engineers, software developers, bioinformatics, and operations. In this role you will help support several ongoing projects, performing cell culturing and differentiation to contribute to the overall goals of the Type 1 Diabetes team. The ideal candidate is self-motivated and ambitious with a strong interest in Type 1 Diabetes, immunology, and stem cell research. They will have hands-on experience with a variety of laboratory techniques, including pluripotent stem cell cultures and the execution of in vitro immunological assays; and comfortable or have experience with small animal handling. Training is provided for those without experience.

Requirements

  • BSc/BA +6 years of academic or industry experience in Biology or relevant scientific discipline; MSc is a plus.
  • Experience with mammalian cell culture outside of coursework labs (experience with iPSC/hESC is highly desired).
  • Advanced mouse handling and husbandry skills preferred.
  • Experience with flow cytometry and immunostaining.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in both Mac and PC computer environments (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Electronic Lab Notebooks).
  • Effective time management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage a substantial workload.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret data and report findings succinctly.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Adaptability to work in a fast-paced and rapidly-changing environment.
  • Ability to work weekend, as necessary.
  • Regular, reliable and consistent attendance

Responsibilities

  • Perform cell culture to support ongoing projects (including stem cell culture and differentiation).
  • Perform flow cytometry and immunostaining.
  • Perform in vivo work with mice, including SQ/IP injections, blood collection, intraperitoneal procedures, and tissue harvest.
  • Work with project lead to establish and execute immunological assays.
  • Perform ELISA, and ELISPOT assays.
  • Analyze data and maintain extremely organized and accurate records using an Electronic Lab Notebook (ELN).
  • Create routine scientific presentations and reports.
  • Work with the Lab Operations team to ensure reagents and consumables inventory is accurately and efficiently supplied.
  • Execute, troubleshoot, and communicate tasks independently and effectively.
