About The Position

As a Research Assistant I, this position will be supporting the laboratory of Dr. Rusty Gage ( Laboratory of Genetics ) where they will focus on research support related to developing novel organoid-based stem cells models of the brain subsequently used to study human microglia in various disease conditions. They will assist in the preparation of media, maintaining and expanding cell lines, differentiation of organoids, immunohistochemistry, and occasional molecular biology techniques will be performed related to RNA extraction and flow cytometry. They will also partake in animal work including maintaining rodent colonies and tissue preparation. The Research Assistant I will work closely alongside a Graduate Student who will provide direct supervision. The role involves receiving comprehensive training in various research techniques to offer valuable research support. Position will be trained in specific techniques and methods in order to execute experiments designed by a Graduate Student. Research Assistant will be expected to carry out, document, organize, and present experimental results to the research team under close supervision. This position supports the Gage lab’s project investing chronic inflammation using neuroimmune organoids. Requirements

  • No professional experience required.
  • Bachelor's degree in Neuroscience, Biological Sciences or related scientific discipline required.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in a scientific role is required for consideration of a Bachelor's degree in a different discipline.

Nice To Haves

  • 1-2 years’ experience in a laboratory setting.
  • Demonstrated experience in sterile tissue culture techniques with mammalian cell culture, including hESCs/iPSCs handling
  • Prior experience work with mice in research environment
  • Knowledge of histology, microscopy techniques, and data analysis software.
  • Knowledge of molecular biology techniques and bioinformatic analyses
  • Proficient in the operation of standard lab equipment and computer hardware/software relevant to the position and institute.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced research environment.

Responsibilities

  • Performs standard mammalian cell culture including regular maintenance of iPSC/ESC lines, performing differentiation experiments including microglia and cortical organoids, and maintaining and creating new stable lines.
  • Assists with regular rodent colony maintenance and xenotransplantation surgical approaches
  • Perform perfusions, dissections, tissue sectioning, immunohistochemistry, and fluorescence imaging for histological verification.
  • Performs various molecular biology techniques such as DNA & RNA extraction and analysis, PCR and qPCR, Gel Electrophoresis, and NGS library prep.
  • Performs lab support duties which may include preparing standard solutions, socking/organizing lab supplies, attending staff meetings, assisting in hazardous/biohazardous waste disposal, and maintaining laboratory safety records.
  • Works on problems of moderate scope in which analysis of situation or data requires the review of identifiable factors.
  • Exercises judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action.
  • Work is performed under direct supervision.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by management.
