About The Position

Works under general direction to provide responsible and skilled technical assistance in performing assignments requiring experience and good knowledge of techniques and practices related to particular field of medical and scientific research. After theoretical and practical training and under the direction of the principal investigator, the Research Assistant performs research involving the ongoing analysis of mouse models of Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders. The Research Technician assists in the molecular, biochemical, anatomical and physiological analysis under supervision and presents completed study to the principal investigator. The Research Technician will be expected to perform studies with general supervision and be expected to assist with the maintenance of the laboratory including laboratory equipment and the mouse colony. Ideally, candidates will be able to commit for at least 2 years in the laboratory.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree with major coursework in field of assignment and no experience required or
  • Bachelor's Degree with major coursework in field of assignment or
  • Completion of 2 years of college with emphasis in coursework in field of assignment or
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • 1 year Research experience at level of Research Technician or equivalent with Bachelor's degree or
  • 4 years Research experience including two years at level of Research Technician or equivalent with 2 years of college or
  • 6 years Research experience with High School Diploma or GED equivalent including 2 years at level of Research Technician or equivalent.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for mouse models that include maintenance of mouse colonies, breeding and genotyping and includes participation in tissue and biospecimen collection, extraction of DNA/RNA/protein, molecular work such as cloning, plasmid isolation, PCR and RT-PCR, gel electrophoresis (Southern, Northern or Western blot analysis as needed).
  • Performs and analyzes physiological, behavioral and anatomical experiments in mouse models
  • Performs immunohistochemical studies on animal tissues
  • Performs ELISA/immunoassays on human and animal biospecimen samples as necessary
  • Uses PC/Mac computers to perform database collection, data analysis, graphing and maintains accurate records, reports and statistics
  • Maintains instruments using appropriate standards and methods to insure meaningful results. Maintain laboratory reagents and supplies. Maintain inventory and order supplies as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
  • Performs more difficult scientific and medical research work in science area such as biology, chemistry, physics, or other related scientific field.
  • Constructs, assembles, and operates laboratory equipment and apparatus.
  • Records and evaluates data obtained from work assignments for use in scientific papers.
  • Collaborates with supervisor or other research personnel in preparation of scientific papers for publication.
  • Reads literature and confers with supervisor concerning procedures and implementation.
  • Collects and organizes research data for project reports.
  • May plan for, and provide working supervision to, work of Research Technicians or other laboratory personnel of lower grade.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
