About The Position

The Research Assistant in the Department of Pharmacy Practice at Wayne State University will provide scientific and technical assistance for laboratory-based, clinical, or population science research. This role involves designing and performing research protocols, assisting in writing research protocols and manuscripts, and ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory guidelines. The position requires collaboration with the Principal Investigator and other research staff to collect and analyze data, maintain laboratory operations, and contribute to research presentations and publications.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field of study, preferred.
  • Entry level (less than a year of job-related experience).
  • Experience performing basic research techniques or interacting with human subjects, preferred.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to analyze, summarize and interpret research findings and data in reports and spreadsheets and communicate results.
  • Knowledge of scientific integrity principles.
  • Excellent time management and organization skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and demonstrated ability to work with others in a collaborative environment.
  • Microsoft office software skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's of Science or Master's Degree in Microbiology.
  • Previous experience in microbiology/molecular biology research environment preferred.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks.
  • Excellent organization skills and attention to detail to oversee study progress.
  • Strong computer skills, data management, Microsoft office, graphing programs, statistical analysis.
  • Experience with Prism / Graphpad / Sigmaplot, SPSS analysis, proficiency in Microsoft Word/Excel.

Responsibilities

  • Perform laboratory-based scientific techniques or clinical/population science research.
  • Design and perform experiments, recruit participants for studies by developing surveys and interviewing candidates.
  • Participate in implementing research objectives, ensuring compliance with all legal, regulatory and protocol guidelines.
  • Assist staff with experiments/research protocols as required.
  • Communicate with principal investigator and Postdoctoral scholars/fellows on the status of research.
  • Collect and log laboratory results, clinical outcomes and/or survey data.
  • Evaluate and perform data analysis using graphs, charts or tables to highlight the key points of the research results collected in accordance with the research protocols as stipulated.
  • Proofread and edit research data and documents to ensure accuracy.
  • Assist principal investigator with writing methods and summarizing/organizing data to be used in preparing and presenting presentations for professional, scientific and academic conferences and submittal to academic and scholarly peer-reviewed journals.
  • Maintain the laboratory work areas including routine maintenance on laboratory equipment as required.
  • Order and organize required research supplies and records.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of work station.
  • Assist in data collection, antimicrobial susceptibility, organism population analysis testing and molecular evaluation.
  • Maintain research records including methods, biosafety protocols, and procedures for Anti-Infective Research Laboratory (ARL).
  • Contribute in the laboratory training of research fellows/post-docs, research assistants, technicians and students assigned to the ARL.
  • Maintain/update electronic records and cataloging of all ARL bacterial isolates, susceptibility and molecular results for ongoing projects.
  • Maintain safety records and assist personnel with appropriate University required safety certification.
  • Perform various in vitro and ex vivo experiments; assist in pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic model experiments.
  • Perform antibiotic biologic and high-pressure liquid chromatography assays.
  • Perform routine data evaluation including statistical analysis.
