About The Position

Washington College seeks applications for a Research Assistants/Bird Bander, working at the Foreman's Branch Bird Observatory from March through May 2025. The Research Assistant will be responsible for participating in the operation of the Foreman's Branch Bird Observatory (FBBO). FBBO is a high-volume banding station established in 1998 and has operated continuously since. The station is located just outside of Chestertown, Maryland on Washington College's River and Field Campus, a 5,000-acre farm with a variety of habitats including a 200-acre restored grassland, hundreds of forests, fallow fields and walking trails. The farm has 2 miles of shoreline along the Chester River and a 90-acre pond. FBBO bands an average of 100 species each spring and typically hosts many visitors including WC students and members of the public.

Requirements

  • BA or BS in biology, environmental studies or a related field is desirable
  • Possession of the North American Banding Council certification at the bander level is preferred
  • Knowledge of bird banding, and minimally one season's experience of migration banding is highly preferred
  • Experience and knowledge to identify, age, and sex all commonly occurring passerines found in the eastern United States
  • Required to have extracted minimally 1,000 birds from mist nets

Responsibilities

  • Be proficient in the extraction of birds from mist nets and traps
  • Required to work outdoors, despite uncomfortable or inclement weather conditions
  • Assist in banding demonstrations provided to the public, visitors, students, and other faculty
  • Other related duties, as assigned
