Job Summary At the direction of the site leader at Elgin (R&D Chemist Advisor), the R&D Chemist Intern will apply chemistry in relation to the manufacturing and testing of salt products. This may include in helping with testing of process samples to diagnose process performance, testing of finished products for quality improvement, technical support for FSQR and customers, and testing to develop new products (innovation) which may include some food science applications. The internship program with R&D will include a defined summer work plan (what projects the intern will be tied to) and a summer ending intern presentation to appropriate stakeholders and R&D function.

Requirements

  • Minimally, completing their sophomore year, (junior year preferred) in an accredited college/university with targeted degree of:
  • S. Chemistry or closely related.
  • Must have completed/on-track successfully General Chemistry Laboratory classes.
  • Overall GPA ≥ 3.3
  • Strong interpersonal skills, ability to communicate with others comfortably.
  • Willingness to perform hands-on work activity (laboratory work) and for periods of time independently without direct supervision.
  • Able to use Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, Power Point).

Nice To Haves

  • Completing their junior year in an accredited college/university with targeted degree of:
  • S. Chemistry with focus in inorganic chemistry or closely related.
  • Successfully completed/on-track with Organic Chemistry Laboratory classes.
  • Overall GPA ≥ 3.0 (if a junior)
  • Proficiency with wet chemistry (titrations, dilutions) preferred.
  • Acumen with computational analysis and data analysis (calculations, conversions, charts and graphs).
  • Familiarity with laboratory safety.

Responsibilities

  • Applying scientific knowledge/discipline in support of R&D work. (Overall General Responsibilities)
  • Learning and conducting laboratory testing to support R&D work. (80%)
  • Computational analysis of lab results and documentation/communicate of those results. (10%)
  • Learning EHS/Laboratory Safety and obtaining real-world career experience related to educational discipline. (10%)
