Argonne National Laboratory is seeking a motivated Research Aide to contribute to the development of next-generation superconducting particle accelerator technologies in support of ATLAS, a national user facility for nuclear physics research. This position involves hands-on and computational work in superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) accelerator systems, including advanced SRF technologies for ion linear accelerators and new approaches based on thin-film superconducting materials for SRF cavities. Experience with thin-film (e.g. Nb₃Sn) coatings, superconducting cavities, and cryogenic diagnostics is beneficial. The role is well suited for someone with a strong undergraduate background in physics or engineering who is interested in cutting-edge research, solving complex technical problems, collaborating with scientists and engineers, and sharing results through presentations and publications. Education and Experience Requirements The candidate is self-motivated and comfortable with self-directed problem solving in a fast-paced, technically demanding environment. They should be creative, exercise strong technical judgment, and be able to apply physics and engineering principles to solve complex practical problems. The role also requires a willingness to perform a wide range of hands-on laboratory work, including tasks that may be physically demanding. Familiarity with materials and metal fabrication methods, along with some experience in vacuum, electronics, and RF systems, is desirable. Strong communication skills and the ability to work closely with colleagues on technical ideas are important, and experience in electromagnetics, cryogenics, or accelerator systems would be an added benefit. The entirety of the appointment must be conducted within the United States. Applicants must be: Currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate studies at an accredited institution. Graduated from an accredited institution within the past 3 months; or Actively enrolled in a graduate program at an accredited institution. Must be 18 years or older at the time the appointment begins. Must possess a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. If accepting an offer, candidates may be required to complete pre-employment drug testing based on appointment length. All students remain subject to applicable drug testing policies. Must complete a satisfactory background check.
