About The Position

The Graduate Research Aide will support experimental nuclear physics research at the Argonne Tandem Linac Accelerator System (ATLAS) facility. The student will assist in planning and executing experiments using the Multi-Sampling Ionization Chamber (MUSIC) active-target detector, including detector setup and data acquisition. A primary responsibility will be the analysis of existing data from the 37Cl(alpha,n) experiment, including event reconstruction, energy calibration, and comparison of measured energy loss with stopping power calculations, and culminating in the extraction of the reaction cross section. Education and Experience Requirements The entirety of the appointment must be conducted within the United States. Applicants must be: Currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate studies at an accredited institution. Graduated from an accredited institution within the past 3 months; Actively enrolled in a graduate program at an accredited institution. Must be 18 years or older at the time the appointment begins. Must possess a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. If accepting an offer, candidates may be required to complete pre-employment drug testing based on appointment length. All students remain subject to applicable drug testing policies. Must complete a satisfactory background check.

Requirements

  • Enrollment in a graduate program in nuclear physics, nuclear engineering, or a closely related field
  • Experience with C++ and the ROOT data analysis framework
  • Familiarity with nuclear physics detector systems and data acquisition hardware (e.g., CAEN digitizers)
  • Experience with nuclear reaction and stopping power codes such as LISE++ and/or Geant4
  • Basic understanding of charged-particle energy loss in matter
  • Ability to work independently and communicate progress in regular research meetings
  • Currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate studies at an accredited institution.
  • Graduated from an accredited institution within the past 3 months;
  • Actively enrolled in a graduate program at an accredited institution.
  • Must be 18 years or older at the time the appointment begins.
  • Must possess a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Must complete a satisfactory background check.
