About The Position

The Research Services Assistant Director (RSAD) will serve as the operational director of the Small Animal Imaging & Radiotherapy Facility (SAIRF) at the UW Carbone Cancer Center, which is distinguished and supported by the National Cancer Institute as a comprehensive cancer center with facilities that meet rigorous high standards. The SAIRF is a client-based research service program that broadly serves researchers across the UW-Madison campus community as well as external academic and industry customers. The RSAD will oversee the staff and day-to-day operations and engage with the SAIRF faculty leader in strategic planning and actions to ensure SAIRF has state-of-the-art technology and is providing high quality services in a cost-effective and policy-compliant manner. The RSAD will be the principal liaison for communications regarding SAIRF operations and business with administration/leadership in the UW Carbone Cancer Center (UWCCC), School of Medicine and Public Health and Office of Campus Research Cores, as well as the UW Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, Radiation Safety Office and Office of Biological Safety, and industry clients. This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location. Candidates who demonstrate the following knowledge, skills, and abilities will be given first consideration: Proven ability to communicate (written and oral) effectively, with research principal investigators, staff, and students as well as superiors, senior administrators, and peers in other units within the organization as well as external entities Demonstrated abilities in workflow development, quality control, operations strategic planning, program/technology development and budgetary/finance skills Knowledge of research service core related contracts (e.g., core fee-for-service, vendor maintenance service) and grants (e.g., instrumentation grants) development

Requirements

  • Seven or more years of progressively responsible professional experience

Nice To Haves

  • Experience developing and overseeing protocols for biosafety, animal care and use, and radiation safety compliance in a research service core laboratory (in an academic setting highly desired)
  • Proficiency in the use of iLab or a similar core facility management platform for service requests and project management, billing, and reporting
  • People management/supervisory experience

Responsibilities

  • Plans staff implementation of protocols and ongoing quality review of one or multiple highly complex clinical research trials or programs
  • Serves as the principal technical liaison
  • Develops and executes budgets and costing strategies for products/services in compliance with university and state policies
  • Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees
  • Formulates and implements technical strategies, plans, and goals for a client-based research program
  • Assists in the development and oversight of the strategic planning and analysis of the research program budget
