About The Position

Regular, Part-Time (37.5% FTE), Limited-Term (up to October 2026, with a possibility of extension), RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM), Yanagimachi Institute for Biogenesis Research (YIBR) and Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Women's Health, located at the University of Hawai‘i (UH) at Manoa, Biomedical Building, in Honolulu, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. HOURLY RANGE: $20.15 - $22/Hr.

Requirements

  • EDUCATION: Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in a Biological Science field.
  • EXPERIENCE: One to three (1-3) years of experience in a research laboratory performing cell and molecular biological procedures.
  • KNOWLEDGE: Strong knowledge of general principles of biological and biochemical subjects.
  • ABILITIES & SKILLS: Strong ability to communicate well both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others, and work independently without regular supervision to troubleshoot issues.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail with processes, procedures and documentation.
  • Ability to use common computer software for word processing (e.g. WordPerfect or Word), database/spreadsheet (e.g. Excel), and presentations (e.g. PowerPoint).
  • Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to pass a post offer criminal background check.
  • Must be able to complete the UH Information Security Awareness Training (ISAT) within two (2) weeks from date of hire, and re-certify every twelve (12) months.
  • PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS: Ability to lift and carry up to fifty (50) pounds unassisted.
  • POLICY/REGULATORY REQUIREMENT: As a condition of employment, employee will be subject to all applicable RCUH policies, procedures, and trainings and, as applicable, subject to the University of Hawai‘i's (John A. Burns School of Medicine) HIPAA/PHI privacy and security. Violation of the RCUH's, the UH's, or the business entity's policies and/or procedures or applicable State or Federal laws and/or regulations may lead to disciplinary action (including, but not limited to possible termination of employment, personal fines, civil and/or criminal penalties, etc.). Must complete the University of Hawai‘i's (John A. Burns School of Medicine) HIPAA/PHI privacy and security training immediately after hire or not later than employee's initial exposure to HIPAA/PHI. Must maintain a current status on the University's and/or the business entity's training requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Evidence of the ability to perform the following: DNA, RNA, protein preparations and analysis, as well as tissue and bacterial culture.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform cell culture techniques.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains tissue and bacterial cultures, and performs experiments with said cultures.
  • Performs downstream analyses of cell culture viability, microbe-host interactions, bacterial strain identification.
  • Conducts routine molecular biology tasks, such as DNA, RNA, and protein preparations and analysis.
  • Performs a variety of laboratory experiments in cellular and molecular biology which may include: Multiplex ELISA, preparation and execution of tissue and cell culture, gene expression analysis by qPCR, microscopy.
  • Assists with collecting and analyzing data.
  • Assists with managing general lab organization and maintenance.
  • Orders supplies for experiments.
  • Assists with training and overseeing Graduate Assistants and volunteers to perform experiments.
  • Assists PI in preparing manuscripts and presentations to make the scientific community aware of the results of this project to the public.
  • Conducts microbial genomic analysis including 16s Amplicon data, and shotgun sequence data, using R and other bioinformatic software, under supervision.
