About The Position

We’re looking for an energetic and resourceful reporter to join our top-notch regional enterprise team at the Bay Area News Group. You’ll cover the many issues that define the Bay Area and shape the lives of those who live and work here – specifically surrounding housing and transportation. You should be an experienced self-starter with an affinity for data and an ability to mine sources for a steady stream of daily news coverage and deeper enterprise for online and print platforms. You will cover everything from trends, financing and construction to data-driven pieces on home sales and stories about how politicians and advocates are responding to the housing crisis. This position reports to our Concord office, but will occasionally be required to work at our San Jose location.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of daily journalism experience
  • Prior experience reporting on housing and transportation preferred
  • Passion for finding and telling human stories across the Bay Area
  • Excellent news judgment and strong writing under deadline pressure
  • The ability to juggle multiple stories of varying complexity
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and have reliable transportation

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree preferred (journalism or related fields)

Responsibilities

  • Cover the Bay Area housing and transportation beats, including the latest developments in policy, regulation and related news
  • Develop and maintain sources within the housing and transportation industries, including developers, advocates, policymakers, homebuyers, sellers, and transit users
  • Put readers first and make clear to them why they should care and/or how the news affects them
  • Show a sense of urgency and a willingness to embrace last-minute changes in coverage plans and still meet critical deadlines and standards for high-impact journalism
  • Watch metrics, which can help us make smart coverage decisions
  • Adhere to the highest professional and ethical standards at all times
  • Collaborate with other reporters who cover homelessness, local housing issues and commercial deals
  • Work independently and as part of a team
