About The Position

The Towns Reporter will cover stories and breaking news in the Town of Islip, focusing on cultivating sources to build diverse audiences. The role involves working closely with editors to monitor metrics and applying data to inform coverage, aiming to serve loyal subscribers and attract new ones.

Requirements

• Experience covering breaking news on deadline is a plus.
• Experience covering topics such as government, education, aviation, and the environment is a plus.
• Demonstrated ability to break news, file quickly and accurately for all platforms, and meet tight deadlines.
• Ability to juggle multiple stories at a time and cultivate sources.
• Understanding of data-driven reporting and ability to produce high-profile enterprise stories.
• Experience with public processes and filing for government records through the Freedom of Information Law.
• Self-starter with a creative approach to news coverage.
• Comfortable appearing on NewsdayTV and proficient in using social media, smartphone photo and video, and other media platforms.
• Ability to write in an engaging manner and attention to detail.
• Strong organization and time management skills.

Nice To Haves

• Ability to find fresh story angles and write concise, lively copy in keeping with Newsday's tone and format.
• Proficiency in shooting iPhone photos and videos.

Responsibilities

• Find enterprise stories and report on daily and breaking news related to the assignment/beat.
• Use social media to find sources and stories to supplement reporting and communicate about covered topics.
• Collaborate with teams, including NewsdayTV, on alternative and visual storytelling.
