Our service area covers 64 counties and more than 500 communities including the greater St. Louis area TITLE: REPAIRMAN ORGANIZATION UNIT: Power Operations, Power Plants APPLICABLE TO: Fossil Fuel Plants DUTIES: Under direct, indirect, or intermittent supervision, and working on a rotating shift schedule or day schedule as required, to do a general range of electric arc and gas welding and cutting, brazing, pipefitting and insulation installation and/or removal on all varieties of power plant equipment. Immediate responsibility at times for the working direction of an apprentice. Work includes a general range of electric and gas welding on power plant equipment including structural steel erection and piping where certification is not required. In addition, to perform other maintenance work on heavy mechanical equipment, such as replacement of liner plates in fans, coal chutes and hoppers; welding repairs to castings and equipment; fitting and welding of all sizes of piping and valves, including items such as measuring, laying out, cutting, threading, bending, fitting and installation of pipe and tubing, replacement of flange, valve, and heater gaskets; valve repacking, repair and overhaul; cleaning and replacement of condenser and heat exchanger tubes; where applicable, repair of traveling water screens. Refractory and insulation work includes items such as but not limited to furnace wall insulation and protective covering; insulation coverings on furnace wall fire side linings, slag tanks and hoppers; gas and hot air ducts and breeching; precipitator casings, main, reheat, and extraction steam lines; boiler feed piping; steam and condensate drains; feedwater heaters and storage tanks; turbine casings, steam chests and valves. In connection with this work: Take welder qualification tests as required. Work from drawings and sketches. Check (including Workman’s Protection Assurance where appropriate) to insure that equipment to be worked on has been properly isolated and protected. Obtain required materials from storeroom. Set up rigging and operate lifting equipment. Erect and work from scaffolds. Operate and/or use mobile equipment, shop equipment, portable power tools, other portable tools, hand tools and test equipment as required to accomplish assigned jobs. Prepare reports of work done accompanied by sketches, if necessary; complete such forms as may be required. Do similar and less skilled work as required. SPECIAL RESPONSIBILITIES: For carrying out prescribed safety precautions and safeguards for the protection of himself and others. When necessary, check for explosive gases before operating torches. For observing and insuring that those temporarily under his direction observe safety instructions issued or applicable. For performing work without disturbing other equipment. For executing orders quickly and properly. For accuracy of work within required tolerances or specifications. For special care and watchfulness to avoid errors in the repair and assembly of equipment. For proper use and care of a wide variety of tools, material, and equipment. For disposition of surplus and scrap materials after each job and keeping areas where work is performed clean and orderly to maintain an atmosphere conducive to good work practices and safety. CONTACTS: With Plant Operations, Maintenance, and Storeroom supervision and personnel. WORKING CONDITIONS: Full range of temperatures from very hot to sub-freezing. Sometimes sudden changes from one extreme to the other. Subject to noise, dusts, dirt, fumes, odors, drafts, and inclement weather. Work at times in cramped and artificial light is frequently necessary. HAZARDS: Subject to hazards existing from possible failure of nearby equipment; to danger from falling while working at elevations above grade, to burns from hot metal, piping or slag; to eye injury from arc flashes; or from any relaxation of the constant care to observe all required safety rules; and to the usual hazards encountered in mechanical construction and maintenance work. Occasionally exposed to noxious fumes in confined places. Requirements

  • Qualification standards as established in the Apprenticeship Program.
  • In event no graduating apprentice is available: Must satisfy requirements as prescribed in the Supplementary Agreement on Uniform Practices Regarding Promotion to Repairman Jobs.
  • Must be accurate, steady and calm in emergencies; possess normal physical strength and endurance; and have no color deficiency in vision.
