About The Position

AMERICAN SpiralWeld Pipe Company is hiring for a 2nd Shift Repair Welder at our Great Lakes Operation in Flint, Michigan. At AMERICAN, we believe in doing things THE RIGHT WAY. As a Repair Welder, you will be setting up and welding pipe repairs required to meet structural pipe standards. They identify and manually weld and r epair defects in welded pipe from the sub-arc welding equipment. These responsibilities are accomplished by performing the duties described herein . Sets-up and operate Flux core wire welding machines for the Repair Rack. Strikes (forms) arc, manually guides electrode or gun along weld line, maintaining length of arc and speed of movement to form specified depth of fusion and bead, as judged from color of metal, sound of weld, and size of molten puddle. Welds in flat, horizontal, and vertical positions. Changes out consumables i.e.: gas bottles and sets to proper pressures, changes wire. Sets welder Amps and Volts to welding specification and sets wire feeder to proper speed to the welding specification. Self-examination of weld for bead size, proper surface finish, and compliance with specifications. Chips off excess weld, slag, and spatter. Identifies weld defects on pipe; identifies areas of pipe that require repair, either pre-marked by inspectors or through visual inspection. Positions pipe on repair rack on the rotators to facilitate the repair process. Performs necessary preparatory work by grinding, gouging, or otherwise preparing pipe. Compliance with all safety rules. Level I welder requires minimal, if any, supervision to accomplish the essential functions of the job. Maintains completion of repairs to be within or at the standard time for repairs. Successfully passes entry and all annual weld tests. Other duties may be assigned by management including but not limited to cross training and housekeeping.

Requirements

  • Must pass a 3G weld test that includes carbon arc back gouging.
  • Must be physically able to perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • Must be able to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to other employees of the organization.
  • Must be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Must be able to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Must be able to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Must be able to read, write, and effectively communicate in English.

Nice To Haves

  • AWS Certification preferred.
