About The Position

As an elite Excess and Surplus Lines market, Nautilus Insurance Group offers commercial property and casualty insurance solutions to appointed wholesale surplus lines producers countrywide. We have specialized in providing these solutions for more than 35 years. We have more flexible policy terms and premium rates on a non-admitted basis. Our focus is small to medium Property and Casualty risks on both an admitted and a non-admitted basis. Our offerings are distributed through partnerships with appointed wholesale surplus lines producers. Our relationships are defined by mutual success, speed to market, customer-centric focus and an expanded appetite. Coverage placed by Nautilus Insurance Group is provided by Nautilus Insurance Company and Great Divide Insurance Company, both W. R. Berkley Corporation members with A.M. Best (Superior) A+ XV ratings. Nautilus Insurance Group is seeking a Renewal Underwriter dedicated to excess products. This role will be located in our Scottsdale office on a hybrid schedule. The Renewal Underwriter provides support to the underwriting process, manages their assigned renewal book of business, and reviews insurance applications on renewal accounts and makes the determination of appropriate terms to be offered.

Requirements

Associate or bachelor’s degree; or at least two years of experience in a business or related field; or an equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
A minimum of one to two (1-2) years of experience as an Assistant Underwriter.
Excess and Surplus lines background is beneficial - p roficient coverage knowledge in Commercial Property and Commercial Excess Liability is required.
Basic to intermediate knowledge of Microsoft suite, inclu ding Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
Capability to learn and utilize various underwriting applications to determine accurate classifications and calculate rates and premium charges using approved rating methods.
Proficient coverage knowledge in Commercial General Liability, Commercial Property and Commercial Excess Liability.
Basic knowledge of Commercial Automobile.

Nice To Haves

AIS & ASLI designations or completion of other insurance related classes is preferred.

Responsibilities

Processes prerenewals by generating monthly reports and compiling/analyzing required information.
Responsible for monitoring renewal production, profitability, and maintaining agency relationships.
Utilize underwriting expertise and authority guidelines to independently make decisions within granted letter of authority on renewal accounts.
Establishes types and limits of coverage to be provided.
Issues quote and negotiates terms with wholesale agents.
Utilize coverage understanding to assess potential exposure and make judgements regarding appropriate form attachment and fill-in form verbiage on renewal accounts.
Reviews renewal accounts to assess acceptability and compliance with Underwriting Guidelines, addresses discrepancies as needed, and documents action in appropriate systems.
Consults directly with agency staff to obtain additional information and/or address concerns on existing accounts. Also responds to agent-initiated mid-term coverage requests within granted letter of authority.
Maintains current territorial expertise regarding market conditions, trends and state-specific nuances that impact may exposure.
Creates, analyzes and interprets data from various systems and underwriting resources.
Promotes consistency amongst Underwriting Team by contributing knowledge and soliciting feedback relative to underwriting philosophy and company goals.
May also collaborate cross-departmentally, as requested.
Effectively communicates (written/verbal) information to both internal and external customers to ensure our standards of excellence are maintained.
Help develop new processes and procedures within newly developed Commercial Excess division to streamline work and increase efficiency.
Maintains confidentiality with discretion and integrity with both internal and external information.
Performs other duties as assigned.
