About The Position

The Removal Defense Supervisor oversees and supports a team of removal defense attorneys handling immigration matters before the Immigration Courts, the Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA), and related agencies. This role focuses on legal supervision, mentorship, and case strategy to ensure high-quality representation for clients facing removal proceedings. This position does not supervise administrative or support staff; supervision is limited to attorneys. The position is based in El Paso, Texas, with an in-person presence strongly preferred; however, remote work may be considered for a highly qualified candidate with significant removal defense experience.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school
  • Active license to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction (Texas preferred, but not required)
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of immigration removal defense experience
  • Demonstrated experience appearing before Immigration Courts and/or the BIA
  • Strong knowledge of immigration law, procedures, and relief from removal
  • Strong legal analysis, writing, and oral advocacy skills
  • Excellent organizational and time-management abilities
  • Ability to mentor, guide, and support attorneys
  • High level of professionalism, judgment, and emotional intelligence
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating across teams

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience supervising or mentoring attorneys
  • Experience with detained removal defense cases
  • Spanish fluency strongly preferred; additional language skills a plus
  • Experience working with vulnerable or underserved populations

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and mentor a team of removal defense attorneys
  • Provide regular case review, legal guidance, and performance feedback to attorneys
  • Support attorney professional development through mentorship, training, and skills-building
  • Foster a collaborative, ethical, and trauma-informed legal practice environment
  • Assist with onboarding and training of new attorneys
  • Review and guide litigation strategy for complex removal defense cases, including detained and non-detained matters
  • Ensure high-quality preparation and filing of applications for relief, including asylum, withholding of removal, CAT, cancellation of removal, adjustment of status, waivers, motions, and appeals
  • Support attorneys in preparing for individual hearings, bond hearings, and merits hearings
  • Identify legal issues and ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and ethical standards
  • Appear in Immigration Court, before the BIA, or with DHS as needed
  • Serve as a legal resource for evolving case law, policy changes, and procedural updates
  • Coordinate with external partners, community organizations, and stakeholders when appropriate
  • Assist in developing and maintaining legal best practices, templates, and internal protocols
  • Monitor attorney caseloads and deadlines to support effective case management and legal quality
  • Support reporting, quality control, and compliance requirements related to legal services
