About The Position

Fitness Instructor I, II, and III: An individual responsible for planning, leading, and delivering structured group exercise classes, recreational activities, or educational programs for participants of various ages (youth, adults, or seniors) in a safe, inclusive, and engaging manner. Instructors design and implement activities that promote health, wellness, skill development, and positive social interaction in alignment with the facility’s mission and standards Key Roles and Responsibilities: Designing Exercise Programs: Based on group goals and visual assessments, instructors develop comprehensive workout programs encompassing cardiovascular exercise, strength training, flexibility, and balance exercises. Demonstrating Exercises: Instructors demonstrate proper exercise techniques, ensuring clients execute movements correctly to maximize results and prevent injuries. Providing Motivation and Support: Instructors encourage and motivate clients throughout their fitness journeys, fostering a positive and supportive environment. Educating Clients: Instructors educate clients about healthy lifestyle habits, including proper nutrition, stress management, and injury prevention. Ensuring Safety: Instructors prioritize safety, maintaining a clean and organized workout environment and offering modifications for exercises when necessary. Qualifications and Skills: Excellent Communication Skills: Instructors effectively communicate with clients, providing clear instructions and feedback. Strong Interpersonal Skills: Instructors build rapport with clients, creating a welcoming and supportive atmosphere. Passion for Fitness: Instructors are passionate about health and fitness, inspiring others to achieve their goals. Professionalism: They maintain a high level of professionalism in their interactions with clients, colleagues, and the public. They adhere to ethical standards and maintain client confidentiality. Safety Consciousness: They prioritize the safety of their clients by conducting thorough assessments, providing proper instruction and supervision, and modifying exercises as needed to prevent injuries. Adaptability: They are able to adapt their approach to meet the changing needs and goals of their clients. They are also flexible in their scheduling and can accommodate clients with different availability. First Aid/CPR/AED: Must be currently certified or have the ability to obtain certification. Fitness Instructor I (Pay Classification 102) In addition to the previously mentioned qualifications a Fitness Instructor I must have: Education or Certification: Many fitness instructors at this level are trained by Fitness Instructors II or III that hold certifications or have obtained a certificate in the classes from accredited organizations. (Skills and instruction may be vetted by a Fitness Instructor II or III.) Knowledge of Class Instruction: Must have formal class training and/or evaluation of skills by a Fitness Instructor II or III. (Possess less than two years of experience without exercise science education.) Fitness Instructor II (Pay Classification 103) In addition to the previously mentioned qualifications a Fitness Instructor II must have: Ability to Teach and Evaluate a Fitness Instructor I: Should be able to aid Fitness Instructor I in teaching skills and possess the knowledge to evaluate their instructing ability. Education and Certification: Must hold certifications in the classes they teach and from accredited organizations to demonstrate their knowledge and expertise. Knowledge of Class Instruction: Must have formal class training and evaluation of skills by a Fitness Instructor III. (Possess at least two years of experience in fitness education.) Fitness Instructor III (Pay Classification 104) In addition to the previously mentioned qualifications a Fitness Instructor III must have: Ability to Teach and Evaluate a Fitness Instructor I and II: Should be able to aid Fitness Instructor I or II in teaching skills and possess the knowledge to evaluate their instructing ability. Education and Certification: A highly qualified fitness instructors hold a certificate in classes they teach. They also may hold (but are not required to have) certifications from reputable organizations demonstrating their knowledge and expertise in the field:. a. American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), b. National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), c. National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), d. National Council on Strength & Fitness (NCSF), e. American Council on Exercise (ACE), or f. International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA). Knowledge of Exercise Science: Instructors possess a strong understanding of exercise science, anatomy, and physiology. As well as having at least 5 years experience in fitness education. Continuing Education: Must continue to staying up-to-date with the latest research and trends in the fitness industry by attending workshops, conferences, and continuing education courses. This ensures that they are providing their clients with the most current and evidence-based information and techniques.
