This entry-level position in animal care focuses on providing outstanding care for various species in a zoo setting. The role involves following established protocols for food preparation, feeding, exhibit maintenance, pest control, and reproductive management. Relief Keepers engage in operant conditioning, provide enrichment, and collaborate to enhance animal exhibits while also conducting educational talks for zoo guests.

  • Provide overall daily care of assigned animals and exhibits to ensure health, safety, and welfare.
  • Observe and monitor animals' health and behavior, reporting any abnormalities.
  • Prepare and provide food and water for assigned animals, administering medication as instructed.
  • Clean animal exhibits, holding pens, and food prep areas, maintaining high sanitation standards.
  • Provide environmental enrichment and training sessions using operant conditioning.
  • Assist with the capture and restraint of various taxa, including dangerous species.
  • Follow safety protocols and assist with animal transfers and procedures as directed.
  • Update animal records and reports for thorough documentation.
  • Interact positively with animal care and veterinary staff and volunteers.
  • Create new enrichment ideas and record results after use.
  • Collaborate with zoo personnel for media events and public relations projects.
  • Supervise and train volunteers and interns as needed.
  • Perform general maintenance and repair of exhibits, including painting and landscaping.
  • Encourage interest in wildlife through positive interactions with zoo guests.
  • High school diploma or equivalent with 3 years of zoo work experience, or a 2-year college degree with 2 years of experience, or a 4-year college degree with 1 year of experience (preferred).
  • Working knowledge of animal care and the ability to follow written and oral directions.
  • Good judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions.
  • Supervisory skills and ability to keep accurate records.
  • Physical strength and stamina to lift 50 lbs and perform physical tasks.
