About the position

The Marathon Martinez Renewable Fuels Facility has an opening for a Refining Reliability Electrical Engineer. The goals of the position include maintenance support, troubleshooting existing issues, budgeting for planned equipment replacements, implementing new solutions and creating new reliability programs targeting longer run-times, higher MTBF and safer operations. The successful candidate will be a highly motivated, team-oriented individual who has experience with industrial electrical applications that include High Voltage Distribution networks, Motor Control Centers, Electrical protection systems, management of change (MOC) processes, and industry standards (NFPA, NEC, NETA, NEMA, etc.). The position requires effective teamwork and interfacing with all departments of the facility. The base schedule for this position is 4-10s (Mon-Thu 6:00am to 4:30pm). Alternate schedules (such as 5-8s or 9-80) may be available. The position is expected to support a rotating on-call calendar approx. 4-6 weeks per year and Outages/Turnaround (TAR) as needed. Periodic overtime work, including weekends, may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain compliance of instrument equipment with the Mechanical Integrity program, including identification of covered equipment, developing and scheduling of ITPM plans, budgeting, analysis of results and developing recommendations for repair.
  • Utilize reliability tools and CMMS software such as SAP, GE APM, failure evaluations, Pareto Analysis and cost analysis to improve reliability of rotating equipment systems.
  • Support the Instrumentation reliability improvement program. Works directly with vendors, reviews upgrade recommendations and champions upgrades through the appropriate budgeting process.
  • Develop Project Request Forms (PRFs) for equipment upgrades including financial justification (life cycle cost analysis) and assist in Decision Support Package (DSP) development.
  • Maintains and updates the Electrical Testing database and ETAP model.
  • Analyze equipment failure and condition monitoring data to identify opportunities for improvement in equipment reliability, availability, and cost of operation.
  • Support facility turnarounds, including scope development, planning, reviews, material selection and execution of work scopes.
  • Develop and oversee shop maintenance/repairs completed internally and at vendors/outside repair facilities.
  • Provide technical expertise and training for maintenance crafts and operators to support reliability programs.
  • Provide technical assistance/troubleshooting assistance in resolving Instrument operations and maintenance problems; contact internal and external experts as required.
  • Participate in safety walks and field audits on a regular basis.
  • Serve as a technical resource to the Process Safety Department during HAZOP reviews.
  • Lead and/or support multi-disciplinary incident investigations to determine root cause and identify corrective actions.
  • Ensure technical documentation is maintained per PSI (Process Safety Information) Policies, including Loop drawings, Instrument datasheets, wiring diagrams and datasheets.
  • Champion Mechanical Integrity program and the Major Equipment Deficiency process with key stakeholders.
  • Generate and manage MOCs (Management of Change) per jurisdictional, MPC corporate and site-standards.
  • Develop and review turnaround work lists and scopes for critical equipment.
  • Provide leadership and decision-making skills during turnarounds and unplanned equipment outages regarding repair solutions.
  • Provide technical expertise and support to capital project development.
  • Conduct periodic reviews of equipment Work History to identify continuous improvement opportunities.

Requirements

  • Must have a Bachelors Degree in a relevant Engineering discipline. (Degree must be achieved by start date.)
  • Must have a minimum of 3 years of experience in operations, maintenance or Engineering in the refining, petrochemical or other heavy related industry.
  • Must have strong communication skills both verbal and written.
  • Must be proficient at Microsoft: Excel, Word and Outlook.
  • Must be able to wear appropriate PPE in the refinery (respirator), be able to physically perform all tasks in the field and take hair drug test and physical.
  • Must have a clean and valid driver's license.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the US without the need for future VISA sponsorship.
  • Must be able to obtain a TWIC Card.
  • Travel Requirement is 10% or less.

Nice-to-haves

  • 5 years of experience as an Electrical Engineer in the refining, petrochemical or other heavy related industry preferred.
  • Experience with industrial electrical equipment (motor starters, protective relays, panels/switchracks, substations), electrical area classification, management of change (MOC) processes, and industry standards (NFPA, IEEE, NEMA, API, etc.) is preferred.
  • Experience in the use of Electrical management software such PowerDB and ETAP is preferred.
