As a Relay Technician at Potomac Testing, you will be a key player in the testing, maintenance, and troubleshooting of protective relays within power distribution and transmission systems. Your work will directly contribute to preventing outages, enhancing system reliability, and ensuring compliance with industry standards such as NETA, IEEE, and NERC. This is a critical role supporting grid stability and operational safety across a wide range of high-impact projects.

  • Perform acceptance testing, maintenance, and troubleshooting of protective relays in substations and industrial power systems.
  • Conduct functional tests, calibration, and coordination studies to optimize relay settings and system protection.
  • Analyze and interpret relay event records and fault waveforms to diagnose system issues.
  • Work with electromechanical, microprocessor-based, and digital relays from manufacturers like SEL, GE, ABB, and Siemens.
  • Test and verify differential, overcurrent, distance, and voltage protection relays to ensure proper operation.
  • Inspect and maintain relay panels, control circuits, and protection schemes for breakers, transformers, and generators.
  • Identify and correct relay misoperations, incorrect settings, and wiring issues.
  • Assist in investigating system outages and disturbances to improve reliability.
  • Collaborate with engineers and field teams to implement relay protection upgrades and system improvements.
  • Maintain accurate test reports, maintenance records, and relay settings for compliance with NERC, IEEE, and utility standards.
  • Follow industry safety protocols and ensure adherence to NETA testing standards.
  • Communicate effectively with team members, clients, and project managers.
  • Hands-on experience with protective relays in transmission or distribution systems.
  • Strong understanding of relay theory, system protection principles, and electrical circuitry.
  • Proficiency with relay test sets (e.g., Doble, Omicron, Megger) and diagnostic tools.
  • Ability to analyze relay operations and power system events.
  • NETA Level II, III, or IV, or relevant relay protection training.
