About The Position

The Division of Behavioral Health and Recovery is seeking to hire a Rehabilitation Counselor Trainee for the Alton Mental Health Center located in Alton, Illinois. Under direct supervision of the Rehabilitation Services Manager, receives training and orientation in the development of and directing a vocational rehabilitation program for mentally ill individuals living on a forensic unit at the Alton Mental Health Center. Assists higher level staff in the development, implementation and conduct of individual living skills programs adjunctive to vocational objectives and independent living. Participates in treatment planning case conferences. Maintains files, documentation and statistical data. Travels in performance of job duties.

Requirements

  • Requires possession of a Master’s Degree from a college or university program accredited by the Council On Rehabilitation Education (CORE) OR a Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in rehabilitation counseling, rehabilitation administration, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, deaf education, special education or closely related field.
  • Requires the ability to utilize office equipment, including personal computers and software programs such as Microsoft Office Suite in the development of reports, etc.
  • Requires the ability to physically restrain patients as necessary to prevent injury to patient or others.
  • Requires the ability to use and perform non-violent crisis intervention techniques.
  • Requires the ability to obtain and maintain Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate.
  • Requires the ability to pass CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) training.
  • Requires the ability to access various worksites throughout the hospital and the ability to respond to facility-wide emergencies.
  • Requires the ability to travel in the performance of job duties.
  • Requires the ability to lift and carry moderate loads up to 25 pounds.
  • Requires ability to pass the IDHS background check.
  • Requires ability to pass a drug screen for drugs prohibited from recreational use under Illinois Law.

Responsibilities

  • Receives orientation and on-the-job training in the development and directing of wide-ranging vocational rehabilitation programs for patients in the forensic units.
  • Receives orientation and on-the-job training in developing and conducting living skills training programs.
  • Gathers statistical data for evaluation of assurance of the quality of care being given and the effectiveness of the vocational rehabilitation programs.
  • Receives training in how to identify options for CPI (non-crisis intervention techniques) and best practice treatment interventions in lieu of restraints/seclusions.
  • Travels to escort patients to community-based activities, training, interviews or for evaluation purposes.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of duties enumerated above.
