Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Ability to follow both verbal and written instructions accurately.
  • Strong commitment to exceptional customer service and patient-centered care.
  • Awareness of age‑related patient differences and ability to adapt communication and support accordingly.
  • Ability to read and understand medical record documentation.
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills, with the ability to manage tasks in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to remain calm and effective in stressful situations and adapt to changing clinical needs.
  • Strong critical‑thinking skills, including the ability to recognize and communicate changes in patient status (e.g., vital signs, symptoms) to the supervising therapist promptly.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to interact professionally with a diverse population, including patients, families, therapists, nurses, coworkers, supervisors, and leadership, while demonstrating UPMC’s core values: Caring & Listening Dignity & Respect Excellence & Innovation Quality & Safety Responsibility & Integrity
  • Must adhere to all UPMC and CRS policies and procedures.
  • Completion of all required system, business unit, facility, and department-specific competencies and orientations.
  • CPR (American Heart Association standard with both didactic and skills demonstration) required within 30 days of hire.
  • Accepted: Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting (with renewal)
  • Act 33 Clearance (with renewal)
  • Act 34 Clearance (with renewal)
  • Act 73 FBI Fingerprint Clearance (with renewal)

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience as a therapy technician, rehabilitation aide, or nursing assistant preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assisting licensed clinicians (OT, PT, SLP, PTA, COTA) with patient care activities aligned with state practice acts.
  • Transporting patients safely and courteously throughout the facility.
  • Helping with patient transfers, setup for therapy sessions, and ensuring patient comfort and safety.
  • Supporting non‑treatment aspects of care, following universal precautions and UPMC core values.
  • Managing daily clerical tasks such as logs, scheduling, filing charges, and patient registration.
  • Keeping treatment areas clean, organized, and compliant with regulatory standards.
  • Maintaining equipment and medical supply inventory, including weekly supply checks.
  • Answering phones professionally and assisting with communication across the care team.
  • Assisting with the orientation and mentorship of new aides and therapy volunteers.
  • Communicating clearly with clinicians about patient responses and status throughout treatment.
  • Participating in safety, evacuation, and emergency preparedness procedures.
