About The Position

Join a leading, nationally recognized healthcare system in a critical role supporting inpatient rehabilitation coding. We are seeking an experienced Rehab Inpatient Coder who brings strong knowledge of ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, DRG coding, and IRF-PAI to accurately code complex rehab cases while ensuring regulatory compliance and data integrity. The Rehab Inpatient Coder is responsible for reviewing inpatient rehabilitation medical records and assigning accurate ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, DRGs, and IRF-PAI codes. The role supports quality documentation, compliance, and timely billing. You will collaborate with providers and clinical staff to clarify documentation and maintain high accuracy standards.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required; Associate or Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Formal training in ICD‑10‑CM, ICD‑10‑PCS, DRGs, and IRF‑PAI.
  • Minimum 3 years of coding experience in an inpatient rehabilitation facility (IRF) including IRF‑PAI.
  • Minimum 4 years inpatient hospital coding experience required.
  • Must possess one of the following credentials: Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)
  • Must reside in CST or EST time zones.
  • Cannot reside in Alaska, California, or Hawaii.
  • Must supply own equipment — no equipment is provided.

Responsibilities

  • Code Assignment: Review and code inpatient rehab charts using ICD‑10‑CM, ICD‑10‑PCS, DRG, and IRF‑PAI requirements.
  • Documentation Review: Ensure medical records support all assigned codes and reflect complete, compliant documentation.
  • Data Abstraction: Enter essential clinical and demographic data into billing and hospital systems.
  • Compliance: Follow AHIMA, CMS, HIPAA, and facility guidelines to ensure accurate and compliant coding.
  • Provider Collaboration: Communicate with physicians and clinical teams for documentation clarification when necessary.
  • Accuracy & Productivity: Maintain minimum 95% coding accuracy and meet productivity targets.
  • Ongoing Education: Participate in training to stay current on changes in coding regulations and rehab documentation requirements.
