About The Position

AIS is looking for a Regulatory Support Engineer to work in Oak Ridge, TN. The Regulatory Support Engineer provides direct technical, analytical, and coordination support to the Regulatory Affairs Lead within ORNL’s HFIR Updates and Neutron Upgrades Projects. This position plays a critical role in supporting regulatory compliance activities, safety basis documentation development, environmental compliance coordination, and regulatory engagement preparation for one of the nation’s most important nuclear research facilities. Working under the direction of the Regulatory Support Lead, this role interfaces with nuclear safety staff, engineers, environmental specialists, and project stakeholders to ensure regulatory requirements are clearly interpreted, documented, tracked, and implemented. The Specialist contributes to maintaining compliance with DOE, NRC, and applicable state and federal regulations while supporting ORNL’s strong nuclear safety culture. Requirements

  • BS degree in nuclear engineering, mechanical engineering, engineering science, or a related technical field with 5+ years of relevant experience (or MS with 3+ years, PhD with 1+ years)
  • Experience supporting regulatory compliance activities in a nuclear, DOE, or highly regulated technical environment.
  • Working knowledge of DOE and/or NRC regulatory frameworks and safety basis documentation.
  • Experience supporting audits, inspections, or regulatory reviews.
  • Strong technical writing, organizational, and documentation skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a matrixed, multidisciplinary project environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience supporting DOE nuclear facilities, reactor projects, or nuclear facility upgrades.
  • Familiarity with safety basis documentation (DSA, TSRs, hazard analyses).
  • Knowledge of environmental compliance requirements applicable to nuclear facilities.
  • Experience tracking regulatory commitments, corrective actions, or requirements management tools.
  • Demonstrated commitment to nuclear safety culture and quality assurance.

Responsibilities

  • Support implementation of regulatory strategies developed by the Regulatory Affairs Lead.
  • Assist with ensuring compliance with DOE Orders (including DOE O 420.1C), DOE-STD-1189-2016, NRC General Design Criteria (10 CFR 50 Appendix A), and other applicable codes and standards.
  • Track regulatory requirements, commitments, and action items to ensure timely completion.
  • Monitor updates to regulatory guidance and standards and communicate impacts to the project team.
  • Support the development, review, and maintenance of safety basis documentation, including contributions to amended safety basis documentation for HFIR.
  • Prepare draft regulatory submittals, technical inputs, and supporting analyses for review by the Regulatory Affairs Lead.
  • Assist with hazards analysis documentation, risk evaluations, and mitigation tracking.
  • Support environmental compliance documentation and coordination with environmental subject matter experts.
  • Support preparation for regulatory meetings, inspections, audits, and reviews with DOE, NRC, and other agencies.
  • Compile briefing materials, technical responses, and supporting documentation for regulatory engagements.
  • Track regulatory inquiries, requests for information, and corrective action responses to closure.
  • Maintain accurate regulatory records and documentation systems in accordance with project and regulatory requirements.
  • Assist in identifying regulatory and compliance risks and documenting mitigation actions.
  • Support corrective action planning, tracking, and verification.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives related to regulatory processes and compliance practices.
  • Work collaboratively with nuclear safety staff, engineers, environmental specialists, and project personnel across ORNL.
  • Provide clear, concise technical documentation and summaries for internal stakeholders.
  • Support preparation of presentations and reports for internal project reviews and external oversight bodies.
