About The Position

The New Museum of Contemporary Art is seeking a skilled professional for the Registrar position within the Exhibitions Department. This full-time, union-represented role reports to the Chief Registrar and involves collaborating with the Lead Registrar, the entire Exhibitions Department, Curatorial Department, Preparators, Installation Crew, and Operations Staff. The Registrar will be responsible for managing temporary exhibitions from planning through installation and dispersal. The position is expected to be 40 hours/week, Monday to Friday, from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, but requires occasional work on weekends and evenings, and may involve travel. It is eligible for the New Museum’s employee benefits programs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • At least 3 years’ experience working within Registrar department of an art museum
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Excellent organization and writing skills
  • Detail-orientated and extremely conscientious about meeting goals and deadlines
  • Ability to work easily with multiple teams across the Museum

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the planning and installation of assigned exhibitions, including correspondence, exhibition checklist management, condition reports, insurance certificates, and loan agreements
  • Responsible for making arrangements for transportation, crating, storage, completing receipt/release forms for assigned exhibition loans
  • Execute detailed condition reports for outgoing and incoming exhibition loans
  • Oversee load-out and delivery of crates
  • Be present on the gallery floor during installation and work directly with Chief Preparator on delegating tasks to installation crew and advise on packing
  • Work integrally with the installation crew on the gallery floors to ensure that extreme care is being taken with the handling of each object and that the movement of crates and other activities taking place on the gallery floor is done in an organized manner to mitigate all risk to artworks
  • Multi-task continuously to maintain effective time management in order to meet tight deadlines
  • Coordinate and provide administrative support for domestic and international traveling exhibitions, including transport, liaison with venues, courier arrangements, custom requirements, and installation at venues
  • Review of loan agreements, loan restrictions, and insurance requirements
  • Contribute to the development and management of exhibition budgets with the Chief Registrar, Director of Exhibitions Management and Curatorial department
  • Perform maintenance of exhibitions as needed, including participating in daily on/off procedures, pedestal and platform cleaning, vacuuming and sweeping, etc.
