About The Position

The Museum of Modern Art is currently accepting applications for a Registrar, Exhibitions, in the Collection Management and Exhibition Registration Department (CMER). Reporting to the Director of Registration and Collection Management, the Registrar works independently on exhibitions and oversees a team of exhibition registrars. Responsibilities: Manages multiple levels of exhibition registrars. Participates in recruitment for select open positions and makes hiring recommendations or decisions for staff vacancies; supervises assigned staff on daily basis, providing relevant training, feedback, guidance, professional development, etc.; ensures compliance with and comprehension of Museum policies and relevant collective bargaining agreement, if applicable; conducts annual performance reviews with direct reports; manages the constructive discipline process, as warranted; etc. In conjunction with department Director, makes, executes and exercises independent judgment about registrar-related management policies; determines team assignments; compiles statistics for internal needs and external requests. Works independently, as well as with a cross-departmental team, on temporary exhibitions, including preliminary planning and procurement of budget estimates for packing and transportation, correspondence with lenders, borrowers, donors, and vendors to arrange packing, shipping, insurance, and courier arrangements for all works of art related to assigned projects; compiles associated documentation; examines and records condition of works; creates and maintains files for loans and objects; arranges trips for couriers when required; serves as courier as needed. Participates in the applications for USGI as needed. In conjunction with the Department Manager monitors departmental archives for accuracy, ensures timely review and transfer of physical and digital assets; and coordinates departmental intern program. Performs any other duties reasonably related to the functions described above.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in art history, fine arts, or similar; master’s degree
  • Must have in-depth knowledge of 20 th century art and artists' materials.
  • Minimum 10-12 years of progressively responsible experience in all phases of registration, preferably in an art museum with an ambitious temporary exhibition program.
  • Two years’ experience training/supervising staff.
  • Expertise in current professional standards and procedures, including best practices for packing and shipping, related applications, contract management systems, and collection/exhibition databases, digital condition reporting and TMS a plus.
  • Familiarity with fine arts insurance and indemnity policies.
  • Experience with budget development and cost-control measures.
  • Demonstrated initiative and judgment.
  • Strong administrative and organizational skills.
  • Ability to remain calm in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Ability to form and maintain successful working relationships with museum staff, lenders, vendors, and artists.
  • Ability to train and oversee a staff of four to five professional registrars within the area of focus; develop and refine departmental procedures with the director of the department and implement changes which may be necessary to improve operational efficiency.
  • MoMA participates in the TSA’s Certified Cargo Screening Facility Program. Therefore, if hired, the individual must successfully complete a security threat assessment through the Department of Homeland Security in order to participate.
