About The Position

This position supports the school district by helping maintain buildings and equipment so students and staff have a safe, comfortable learning environment. An HVAC Apprentice works alongside experienced technicians and learns skills in heating and cooling, electrical, and general building maintenance. On-the-job training is provided while assisting with actual maintenance and repair tasks.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled at a high-school within The School District of Springfield R-12.
  • Must pass a Criminal Background Clearance, the results of which must be satisfactory to the District, required.
  • Must pass a pre-employment physical and drug screen.
  • At least 16 years of age or older
  • Will not operate district vehicles but must have reliable transportation and the ability to report to assigned work location as scheduled.
  • Must follow apprentice-level safety rules (e.g., student apprentices will not disconnect electrical power without a trainer present).
  • Possess reliable basic algebra skills and the capability to clearly interpret and follow detailed written and verbal instructions.
  • Understanding of basic tools, materials, and safety practices used in maintenance work.
  • Ability to learn and apply new technical skills.
  • Ability to use hand tools and basic power tools safely after training.
  • Ability to keep accurate records, such as training hours and task logs.
  • Read technical information with support from a trainer.
  • Solve basic problems and ask for help when needed.
  • Collaborate and communicate clearly with teammates.
  • Follow safety procedures and meet deadlines.
  • Work well with different people across the district and follow all directions provided by the designated trainer and supervisor.
  • Must be able to hear instructions, see details clearly, and communicate effectively.
  • Must possess the physical ability to perceive the nature of sounds, make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes, express or exchange ideas by the spoken word, substantial movements (motions) with the hands, wrists, and/or fingers, and discern letters or numbers at a given distance.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience with tools, shop classes, or mechanical work is helpful but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Travel with maintenance staff to different school buildings to assist with repairs and preventive maintenance.
  • Help inspect, repair, and replace parts on district equipment, including HVAC units, pumps, motors, and classroom equipment.
  • Assist with installing new or replacement equipment under supervision.
  • Learn to safely use hand tools, power tools, testing meters, and technology-based equipment.
  • Use ladders, lifts, and other equipment safely to reach work areas (with supervision and training).
  • Build foundational skills in HVAC and general maintenance, following direction from trainer or supervisor.
  • Maintain required training logs, safety certifications, and documentation during progression in the apprenticeship.
  • Follow all safety procedures and district guidelines.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the Facilities team.
