About The Position

The Vascular Ultrasound Technologist is responsible for performing comprehensive vascular ultrasound examinations in a dedicated outpatient setting at BMC Health Multispecialty Methuen. As the sole technologist at this site, the technologist will independently manage all aspects of daily operations, conduct a full range of vascular ultrasound exams, support venous procedure interventions, and ensure the highest standards of diagnostic imaging. This role requires a deep understanding of hemodynamics, vascular pathology, and IAC accreditation compliance. The ideal candidate is highly experienced, efficient, and knowledgeable, with a commitment to providing exceptional patient care and adhering to IAC standards. This position reports directly to the Vascular Lab Technical Manager and the Chief of Vascular Surgery, ensuring alignment with department goals, operational efficiency, and best practices for patient care.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 5–10 years performing a full range of vascular ultrasound exams, with specific experience in supporting venous treatments, including venous ablations, in a hospital or high-volume outpatient setting.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Vascular Ultrasound, an allied health discipline, or a health/science field. An Associate’s degree with formal training in Vascular Ultrasound is acceptable.
  • Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) or Registered Vascular Sonographer (RVS) certification required.
  • Expertise in performing and interpreting a full spectrum of vascular duplex and physiologic examinations, including but not limited to carotid, abdominal aorta, renal, mesenteric, arterial, venous, and venous reflux studies across normal, abnormal, and post-treatment states.
  • Strong knowledge of vascular pathology and hemodynamics.
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently in a high-demand outpatient setting.
  • Excellent communication skills, with an emphasis on patient education and collaboration with physicians.

Responsibilities

  • Perform Non-Invasive Vascular Ultrasound Examinations: Independently perform a full spectrum of vascular duplex ultrasound and physiologic examinations, ensuring accurate image acquisition, hemodynamic assessment, high-quality documentation, and precise preliminary interpretations to support timely clinical decision-making.
  • Support Venous Procedure Interventions : Provide ultrasound guidance, patient preparation, and clinical support during various venous procedures, including but not limited to venous ablation therapies and VenaSeal treatments.
  • Manage Daily Operations: Oversee all aspects of the non-invasive vascular testing service at the site, ensuring efficient workflow, proper exam sequencing, timely patient care, and complete and accurate documentation.
  • Adhere to IAC Accreditation Standards: Follow all department set IAC vascular testing protocols and criteria, maintain protocol consistency, and participate in required quality assurance activities, including exam correlation, reproducibility, and case study review.
  • Provide Preliminary Results and Documentation: Review ultrasound images, detect pathologies, and provide preliminary interpretations of results. Ensure that all reports are accurate, timely, and compliant with IAC standards.
  • Provide Patient Communication and Exam Preparation : Explain duplex ultrasound and physiologic procedures, prepare patients for testing, ensure comfort and understanding throughout the examination, and reinforce ordering clinician instructions as appropriate.
  • Maintain a Clean and Organized Work Environment : Ensure the ultrasound room and work area remain clean, organized, and properly stocked to support patient safety, infection control standards, and efficient workflow.
  • Maintain and Troubleshoot Equipment : Operate and maintain duplex ultrasound systems, physiologic testing equipment (e.g., pressure cuffs, PVR systems), and perform routine quality checks; promptly coordinate service when equipment issues arise.
  • Participate in Professional Development: Engage in continuing education to stay current with advances in vascular duplex and physiologic testing, maintain required certifications, and remain compliant with IAC-related educational standards (Maintain 30 CME credits per triennium and complete all annual training and competency modules as required).
  • Support Clinical Coordination : Communicate effectively with the Vascular Lab Technical Manager, Chief of Vascular Surgery, and referring clinicians to ensure accurate exam prioritization, preliminary reporting, and appropriate follow-up planning.
  • Provide Training and Technical Guidance: offer technical instruction and guidance to medical students, residents, fellows, and other staff on duplex and physiologic testing protocols, exam technique, and best practices when applicable.
