The Wound Ostomy Registered Nurse has authority, responsibility and accountability for assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of wound and ostomy care throughout UAMS. This role functions primarily as a consultant, providing direct patient care and education to selected patients, and is responsible for staff development and product recommendations in areas of expertise. The nurse maintains records and statistics reflecting role performance and participates in UAMS-wide committees and projects. Additionally, the position involves providing independent consultation for wound/ostomy patients, following protocols and treatment plans for various skin issues, and reviewing patient care based on evidence-based practice. Collaboration with physicians for coordination of care and discharge planning is essential. The nurse educates staff on prevention and treatment of skin issues (assessment, intervention, evaluation) and ostomy care, including the placement of Wound Vacs as ordered by a physician and monitoring for proper utilization of Specialty Beds. The role also includes assisting staff in maintaining current knowledge and competence, data collection/tracking/surveillance, assisting in policy/procedure/protocol development, conducting product evaluations for quality and cost-effectiveness, and managing related programs/projects. The individual must be adaptable to multiple demands, use sound judgment, adhere to ethical standards, champion new initiatives, and demonstrate strong communication skills.
