About The Position

The Registered Respiratory Therapist participates in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients with pulmonary disorders. Therapists are responsible for the initiation and management of Life Support Systems under the direction of the physician. The RRT may perform all tasks included in their license practice act within department guidelines and policies. The RRT must function with limited supervision, relying on their education and the guidance of the physician and supervisory staff.

Requirements

• Associate's degree or equivalent (10 Years experience as licensed therapist substituted for associate's degree).
• Pass both portions of NBRC Advanced Practitioner (Registry) Exam.
• Current Louisiana State License or permit issued by LSBME.
• BLS certification.
• ACLS within 1 year of hire.

Responsibilities

• Initiate and manage Life Support Systems under the direction of the physician.
• Consult with physicians concerning respiratory care procedures.
• Initiate bronchodilator therapy in situations of respiratory distress.
• Attend Code Blue and MET calls.
• Transport patients requiring respiratory assistance.
• Check patient oxygen equipment and spot-check respiratory care equipment.
• Prepare, initiate, and monitor patient respiratory ventilator system.
• Administer and assess respiratory therapy procedures.
• Assess therapy effectiveness and prepare equipment and medications following physician's orders.
• Draw from in-dwelling lines and obtain, analyze, and interpret arterial samples.
• Assist in the education of respiratory employees on proper arterial puncture procedures.
• Complete competency assessment on peers and students.
• Teach at least one department in-service per year.
• Maintain BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications.
• Serve on departmental/hospital committees and complete community service projects.
