About The Position

The registered radiologist assistant (RRA) is an advanced practice radiologic technologist who works under the supervision of a radiologist. The RRA helps with all aspects of patient care in the radiology department, including, but not limited to, conducting consultations, providing education and performing clinical procedures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree. Must have completed an ARRT-approved radiologist assistant educational program.
  • Current, active certificate as a Radiologist Assistant, issued by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (AART) or Certification Board of Radiology Practitioner Assistants (CBRPA).
  • Must be licensed by the State of Florida, Department of Health, as a Radiologist Assistant.
  • Must be certified as a Certified Radiologic Technologist (CRT) by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
  • Current ACLS.
  • Successful provision of inpatient radiologic services for at least 100 patients within the past 12 months (waived for applicants completing training within the previous 12 months).
  • Initial applicants that completed training within the previous 12 months must submit a letter of reference from the program director of their training program attesting the competency of all privileges requested.
  • Renewal - Successful provision of services to at least 400 patients in the past 2 years.

Responsibilities

  • Review the patient’s medical record to verify the appropriateness of a specific exam or procedure and report significant findings to radiologist.
  • Perform pertinent physical examination and analysis of data (e.g., signs and symptoms, laboratory values, and significant abnormalities) and report findings to the supervising radiologist.
  • Interview patient to obtain, verify, or update medical history.
  • Explain procedure to patient or significant others, including a description of risks, benefits, alternatives and follow-up; assess risk factors that may contraindicate the procedure.
  • Administer oxygen as prescribed; monitor IV for flow rate and complications.
  • Position patient to perform required procedure, using immobilization devices, restraints and modifying technique as necessary.
  • Perform urinary catheterization. Unless the patient is known to have an anatomic anomaly, recent surgery in the area, etc. Direct supervision would be needed.
  • Recognize and respond to medical emergencies.
  • Operate a fixed/mobile fluoroscopic unit.
  • Explain effects and potential side effects to the patient of the pharmaceutical required for the examination.
  • Evaluate images for completeness and diagnostic quality, and recommend additional images as required.
  • Applies principles of radiation safety to minimize exposure to patients, self and others.
  • Applies appropriate standard precautions and personal protective equipment to prevent cross-contamination of contagious diseases.
  • Evaluate images for diagnostic utility and report clinical observations to the radiologist.
  • Review imaging procedures, make initial observations, and communicate observations only to the radiologist.
  • Record previously communicated initial observations of imaging procedures.
  • Communicate radiologist’s report to referring physician consistent with ACR Communication Guidelines.
  • Provide physician-prescribed post care instructions to patients.
  • Perform follow-up patient evaluation and communicate findings to the radiologist.
  • Document procedure in appropriate record and document exceptions from established protocol or procedure.
  • Write patient discharge summary for review and co-signature by radiologist.
  • Maintains reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies, the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.
  • Maintains compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures.
